San Bernardino County Medical Society

San Bernardino County Medical Society CMA is a major player at the State Capitol.

SBCMS' mission is to promote the science and art of medicine, care and well-being of patients, protection of public health, betterment of the medical profession and equitable access to care for patients. Physician Advocacy
Physicians play a critical role in advocating for sound legislation that will positively affect the delivery of health care and the practice of medicine in California. In addition to testifying in policy committees, participating in CMA’s annual Legislative Leadership Day in Sacramento, and monitoring the CMA Hot List of bills, physicians can become Key Contacts – our most effective grassroots tool. The association’s staff lobbyists keep legislators aware of how proposed legislation could enhance or threaten patients’ health or physicians’ ability to practice medicine. From sponsoring legislation to testifying in committee and meeting one-on one with elected officials, lobbyists advocate on behalf of physicians throughout the legislative session.

California is considering prohibiting the fabrication and installation of artificial-stone countertops — effectively banning the products — in response to an epidemic of the fatal lung disease silicosis among workers who cut, grind and polish countertop slabs before they are fitted into homes and businesses. Silicosis is caused by the inhalation of pulverized silica, one of the most common minerals on earth. The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board adopted an emergency temporary standard that required the employers of such workers — most of whom are young, immigrant men — to suppress toxic silica dust with water and take other protective measures.

Brian Wolk thank you for your work on the CMA House of Delegates resolution on silicosis. It's important to keep workers safe while they work.

A state board is considering the drastic move, which could come as soon as May, after an outbreak of the lung disease silicosis among countertop fabricators.

Proceed with caution. We’ve got to be able to pay for it and not cause care rationing, long wait times for surgeries and exacerbate access to care issues.
