California's IID laws have expanded — and if you've been convicted of a DUI in San Bernardino or Riverside County, there's a good chance an ignition interlock device is part of your requirements.
An IID is a breathalyzer installed in your vehicle that prevents the engine from starting if it detects alcohol. All activity is recorded and reported directly to the DMV and courts. The requirement applies statewide now — not just in certain counties.
How long you're required to have one depends on your case: 6 months for many first-time offenders, 1 year for a second conviction, and longer from there. And importantly — your IID requirement and your DUI education program are two separate obligations. You have to complete both.
We just published a full guide covering installation, costs, restricted license eligibility, and what violations look like.
