California's IID laws have expanded — and if you've been convicted of a DUI in San Bernardino or Riverside County, there's a good chance an ignition interlock device is part of your requirements.

An IID is a breathalyzer installed in your vehicle that prevents the engine from starting if it detects alcohol. All activity is recorded and reported directly to the DMV and courts. The requirement applies statewide now — not just in certain counties.

How long you're required to have one depends on your case: 6 months for many first-time offenders, 1 year for a second conviction, and longer from there. And importantly — your IID requirement and your DUI education program are two separate obligations. You have to complete both.

We just published a full guide covering installation, costs, restricted license eligibility, and what violations look like.

One of the most common questions after a DUI arrest: how long is this going to take?

The answer depends on which program the court or DMV orders — and they're not all the same. California has three main DUI program types: the AB541 (3 months), the AB762 (6 months), and the SB38 (18 months). Your offense history, BAC level, and sentencing terms all play a role in which one applies to you.

We just published a guide breaking down each program, what triggers each one, and why enrolling early makes a real difference.

🚨 If You Were Just Arrested for DUI in California — You Have 10 Days to Act

This is one of the most important things you can know after a DUI arrest — and one of the most commonly missed.

When you're arrested for DUI in California, the DMV automatically begins the process of suspending your license. You have just 10 days from the date of your arrest to request a DMV hearing to challenge that suspension. If you miss that window, your license will be suspended automatically — regardless of what happens in criminal court.

That's 10 calendar days. Not business days. Not 10 days from your court date.

Here's what most people don't realize:
🔹 Your criminal court case and your DMV case are two separate proceedings
🔹 Even if charges are reduced or dismissed in court, the DMV can still suspend your license
🔹 Requesting the hearing preserves your driving privileges while the process plays out

After a DUI arrest, the steps you take in the first few days matter more than most people know. Enrolling in your DUI education program early also signals to the court that you're taking your situation seriously.

⚠️ Your Legal Prescription Could Get You a DUI in California

Most people think of DUI as an alcohol problem. But here's something that surprises a lot of drivers in San Bernardino County — your doctor-prescribed medication can result in a DUI charge, even if you're taking it exactly as directed.

California law makes it illegal to drive under the influence of ANY drug that impairs your ability to operate a vehicle safely. The law doesn't distinguish between illegal substances and legal prescriptions. If it affects your reaction time, coordination, or judgment behind the wheel — it counts.

Common medications that can lead to a drug DUI include:
💊 Sleep aids (Ambien, Lunesta)
💊 Anti-anxiety medications (Xanax, Va**um)
💊 Prescription pain relievers (Vicodin, Percocet)
💊 Muscle relaxers
💊 Some antihistamines and cold medications

And yes — legal ma*****na use falls under the same rule. Recreational use is legal in California. Driving while impaired by it is not.

If you've been charged with a drug-related DUI in the Redlands area, you may still be required to complete a state-licensed DUI education program — the same as an alcohol DUI. Jackson-Bibby is here to help you navigate every step.

Spring means more people on the road — and more law enforcement activity to match.

🚗 Did You Know Future Cars May Refuse to Start If You're Drunk?

It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it's already federal law — sort of.

Congress passed legislation requiring the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to mandate passive alcohol detection technology in all new vehicles. We're talking built-in sensors that automatically detect impairment and prevent the car from starting — no breathalyzer tube required.

Here's the twist: NHTSA just announced this month that the technology isn't ready yet. The error rate is still too high, and the timeline has been pushed back. But make no mistake — this is coming.

The direction is clear. From California's expanding IID requirements to federal mandates for in-car detection technology, enforcement is only getting tighter. If you're currently navigating a DUI in San Bernardino County, the best move you can make right now is getting compliant — starting with your court-ordered DUI education program.

📰 Update: California's Mandatory IID Bill Is Moving Forward
We've shared this before, but there's a significant development worth noting. AB 1830 — the bill that would require ignition interlock devices for ALL DUI convictions, including first-time offenders — just passed its first committee vote unanimously and is now advancing through the legislature.

Supporters say there should be no "first-time free pass." Opponents argue it removes judicial discretion.

Either way, the message is clear: California is getting tougher on DUI enforcement. If you're navigating a DUI charge in San Bernardino County right now, the time to get compliant is now — not later.

Jackson-Bibby offers state-licensed DUI programs right here in Redlands — and if you need an ignition interlock device, we can refer you to trusted local IID providers too. We're here to help you check every box.

💸 Did You Know a First-Time DUI in California Averages $13,500?

That's not a typo. Between fines, penalties, court costs, increased insurance, and required programs, a first-time DUI conviction in California carries an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties — plus a suspended license.

And that's before you factor in lost wages, IID installation, or attorney fees.

If you've been charged with a DUI in the Redlands area or anywhere in San Bernardino County, completing your court-ordered DUI education program is one of the most important steps toward putting this behind you — and getting your license back.

Jackson-Bibby has been helping people in Redlands and across the Inland Empire navigate this process for over 40 years. We offer flexible scheduling, in-person and virtual options, and classes in English and Spanish — right here in Redlands.
