Many people have asked if there is really a difference from one funeral home to another. The answer is “YES”. One of the main differences is being family/independently owned and being corporate owned. I wanted to share this post because I truly couldn’t have said it better myself!! Sunset Funeral Care is proud to be Family/independently owned AND operated.
🏠 Family-Owned vs. 🏢 Corporate-Owned Funeral Homes — There IS a Difference.
Most families don’t realize this until they’re sitting in a funeral arrangement conference… often during one of the hardest days of their lives.
Not all funeral homes are owned by the people whose names are on the sign.
Some are locally owned by families who live in the community, raise their kids here, attend the same schools and churches, and will still be here decades from now.
Others are owned by large corporations, private equity groups, or investment firms whose primary responsibility is to shareholders and profit margins.
Both can provide services — but the mindset, priorities, and long-term commitment can be very different.
When a funeral home is truly family owned:
✅ Decisions are made locally — not in a boardroom.
✅ Relationships matter more than volume.
✅ Your family isn’t a number or a transaction.
✅ The reputation of the business is personal — because it’s their name, their legacy, and their community.
I’m not here to tell anyone where to go — but I am here to encourage families to ask better questions and understand who they’re trusting during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.
💬 Let me ask you:
Did you know there was a difference between family-owned and corporately owned funeral homes?
Does local ownership matter to you when choosing who cares for your family?
Let’s talk.
