This month Redlands Community Hospital celebrates the 40th anniversary of National Park and Recreation Month. This month is a time to get the family outdoors and get active. As we all get outdoors and get some exercise we worry about bug and mosquito bites, here are some tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

• Always follow product label instructions and reapply as directed
• Do not apply repellent on skin under clothing
• When using sunscreen, apply it before the repellent
• Wear protective clothing such as loose long sleeves and pants and keep children covered
• Cover strollers with protective netting

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month, a type of cancer that begins in the bones or soft tissue of the body. Every year 17,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with it and there are 100 subtypes of sarcoma. Today, we honored the incredible generosity of our very own employees—those who donate to help build the Laura & Jack Dangermond Center for Radiation Therapy. 💙

Each gift, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to expanding cancer care for our community. We invited our employee donors to visit the construction site and see the progress they help make possible.

As a small token of our appreciation, we shared coffee, donuts, and a special canvas bag to say thank you.

As the temperatures rises, heat related illnesses are preventable. Those who are at higher risk include the elderly (65+), children, people with pre-existing chronic conditions, and outdoor workers. If anyone you know falls into those categories, monitor them and watch for signs of a heatstroke. The San Bernadino County Public Health Department recommends the following tips to prevent heat-related illnesses:

- Avoid the sun in peak hours
- Drink plenty of hydrating fluids such as water or low sugar sports drinks
- Avoid alcohol
- Wear light and breathable clothing
- Use sunscreen
- Keep your pets safe

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports July as the month with the highest drowning rates. The CDC also reports drowning as the leading cause of death for children ages one to four. As temperatures rise and we spend more time around water, our Emergency Medicine Medical Director Dr. Evan Houck shares important water safety tips for families.
