I was invited by my friend Geshe Lhundup Jinpa to Deer Park Buddhist Temple in Wisconsin for a beautiful ceremony in honor of His Holiness. It was a sacred day — full of peace and hope

I went for a Qi Gong conference… and walked away with so much more.

Magic doesn’t always show up in mountaintops or meditation halls.
Sometimes it’s a street performer who becomes your guide,
a football player who offers you a ride,
or a tailor who once dressed Michael Jackson.

This city cracked something open in me — and I captured it.

All the way from New York City to Viroqua, Wisconsin, I received this beautiful Tibetan silk scarf and pendant blessed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in the mail today. I am beyond words.

This scarf was gifted to me by Maureen, a Burmese naturalized US citizen from New York City, who worked as a human rights activist for the people of Burma for 25 years. She was staying at my friend Sammy’s Airbnb in Miami while I was staying there a few weeks ago. I befriended her and her friend, who happened to be a physicist researcher for CERN, working with the largest accelerator in the world in Switzerland. They were both fascinating, incredibly worldly and educated, yet so immensely humble and kind. We had the greatest conversation, and I felt blessed just to meet them both and hear them say to stay in touch and remain friends.

Maureen and I talked about Buddhism, and she mentioned she had met the Dalai Lama personally several times. She mentioned she had numerous scarves blessed by His Holiness. I never expected she would bestow one upon me. A scarf blessed by the Dalai Lama, known as a Kata, is considered a sacred offering in Tibetan Buddhism. It is a symbol of purity, compassion, and good intentions, often given as a blessing. Maureen explained that she offered this scarf to the Dalai Lama, then bowed her head, and after he blessed it, he placed it over her neck.

I am still processing this precious gift; it means so much to me. Truly, it is something I will always cherish and remember from someone with whom I shared such a brief encounter.
