April's therapist highlight this month is Erin Konkle.
She is a dedicated physical therapist with a passion for helping patients move and feel their best. After earning my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Western University of Health Sciences in 2018, I have spent the past seven years specializing in outpatient orthopedics, working with individuals to restore function, reduce pain, and enhance their quality of life.
Recently, my focus has expanded to include pre- and post-partum care, a passion that grew after assisting several close friends with navigating pregnancy and post-partum recovery. Recognizing a need in our community, I pursued continuing education and specialized training to better serve this clientele. My goal is to
empower women to stay active and continue doing the things they love before, during, and after pregnancy. I accomplish this through the use of external soft tissue mobilization, muscle energy techniques, and targeted exercise. I am committed to
providing expert care, education, and support to help every patient move with confidence through all stages of life. You can contact her at our Kirkland location.

Spring is in the air! With this beautiful weather, people will be starting to clean up and spruce up their yards. Take caution on doing to much all at once. Also, stretching is always a good idea to warm up your muscles and cool them down after.
Many injuries happen such as back pain, shoulder pain, and Knee pain when one spends the whole day in the yard or garden.
Using Good Body Mechanics can help:
1.Bend from the knees, not the waist: This helps protect your back.
2.Keep your back straight when lifting: Engage your core muscles to avoid strain.
3.Avoid twisting your spine: Move your feet to turn instead of twisting.
4.Use your legs to lift heavy objects: Bend your knees and keep your back straight.
5. Consider raised garden beds to avoid strain on your back and neck.
6.Use tools with longer handles and look for tools with soft, non-slip handles.: This can help reduce strain on your arms and back.
7.Listen to Your Body: Stop if you feel pain: Don't push yourself through pain.
8.Consult a healthcare professional: If you have persistent pain, seek medical advice.

February therapist highlight is Janine Simon PT, MPT, OCS, CLT.
Janine grew up in the Midwest and began her physical therapy career in Virginia. She and her husband were drawn to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest in 2007 and she has been practicing orthopedic PT in Mill Creek ever since. In her spare time Janine enjoys camping, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding and spending time with her husband, daughter and their Corgi.

Janine is a therapist who specializes in Lymphatic therapy also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). It is a specialized massage technique that helps move lymph fluid through the body. Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle form of massage used to relieve inflammation related to lymphedema. Lymphedema is a common side effect of many health conditions. It’s also common among people recovering from cancer treatments, most notably, breast cancer surgery because surgeons remove several lymph nodes during the procedure.

Occasional fluid buildup might not slow you down too much. But if you have persistent swelling in your arms, legs, belly or other areas, it can take a toll. Your limbs might feel tired and heavy. Your skin might feel tight or uncomfortable. Your favorite clothes or jewelry might not fit.
Whether a health condition or medical treatment caused lymphedema, lymphatic drainage massage could be a valuable aspect of your care plan. It’s not right for everyone, though. If you’re curious about lymphatic massage, talk to your healthcare provider or come see Janine.

Stay safe in freezing temperatures with these winter weather tips:

Temperatures dropping statewide, cold weather advisory in effect.
The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) urges residents to take precautions to stay safe this week, as our state experiences the first serious cold snap this winter.

The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory through Wednesday. Most of the state will experience dangerously low temperatures that can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and other health issues. These risks are especially high for people working outdoors, those without shelter or adequate heating, the elderly, and pets.

Many cities and counties are opening or extending hours at warming centers. For a list of available shelters, visit wa211.org or call 211.

To stay safe during this cold snap:

Dress appropriately for the weather by wearing layers, a hat, gloves, and other protective clothing.
If possible, limit your time outside during the coldest parts of the day/evening.
Be aware of the symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite. Seek medical help if needed.
Check on your elderly relatives, friends, neighbors, or anyone with limited mobility.
Do not heat your home with charcoal barbeques or any open-flame equipment, including cooking stoves or ovens. This can lead to fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, or even death.
Do not run generators indoors and keep them away from windows or air vents.
Do not drive in icy or stormy conditions.
Ensure pets are safe and sheltered.

If you slip and fall, give us a call.

Be safe in the snow. Key points to remember:
Clothing:
Wear multiple layers of clothing to stay warm, including a hat, gloves, and waterproof outerwear.
Driving safety:
Slow down, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and consider using snow tires for better traction.
Home preparation:
Clear snow from walkways and driveways promptly, and take steps to protect water pipes from freezing by wrapping them with insulation or letting faucets drip slightly.
Weather awareness:
Monitor weather forecasts and be aware of potential winter storms.
Outdoor activity caution:
Limit time spent outdoors in cold weather, warm up before strenuous activity, and be aware of signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
Pet safety:
Bring pets inside during snowstorms, or provide a sheltered area with access to water.

If you do find yourself hurt from falling, too much shoveling, or car accident we are open and have therapists waiting to see you.
