Beginning in 2027, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) had intended to mandate the inclusion of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the coursework requirements for BACB certificants. This requirement was to specifically address the areas of assessment, intervention, and ethics. Additionally, a new continuing education category was proposed, encompassing diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility.
However, in a recent newsletter, the BACB announced that it would no longer implement these changes. This decision was attributed to the current anti-DEI movement and associated concerns regarding recognition, licensing, and funding.
We respectfully disagree with this decision. Our organization upholds a strong commitment to diversity and the application of evidence-based practices and interventions. Substantial evidence demonstrates that the inclusion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles enhances service quality, treatment integrity, supervision effectiveness, and fosters a positive work environment.
We are proud of the diversity within our clinic, both among our clients and our staff. We have cultivated an environment where differences are valued, and individuals feel secure and respected.
Our commitment to advocating for inclusive and comprehensive care for every client remains unwavering. As a team, we will continue to actively seek out new knowledge to ensure that our assessments and interventions are culturally responsive and considerate of the diverse racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds represented within our client and staff communities. We will also continue to critically reflect on our practices and address any biases, not as a matter of obligation but because we recognize the tangible benefits such efforts bring to those we serve.
