Is toenail polish ok to use? Yes- for most nails. If your nails are stained or yellow looking, this could be from a darker polish and your nails might need a few weeks break from polish. For nails with fungus, we recommend treating these with a topical medication or polish designed for nail fungus if you are treating this with oral medication. Rotate your polish- use it for a few months and then take a few weeks off. We also recommend bringing your own polish in to a pedicure. You can touch up your toenails and have peace of mind knowing you are the only one using the brush.

How do you pick out running shoes? Our number 1 tip is go and get fit from a trained shoe fitter. We work closely with FootZoneBend to get shoes fitted. They are trained to recommend shoes that work for your foot type. If you are unable to get fit, pull out the liner of the shoe and stand on it and see if your foot fits. If the foot is hanging over the edges, it is too small or too narrow for your foot. Put any arch support into the shoes that you plan to wear. You should have at least a thumbs length between the end of the shoe and your foot. The shoe should not rub on the sides of the foot. Check the seams and make sure they don't rub on any bony prominences like hammer toes or bunions.

Do you prefer to be barefoot or wear shoes at home? If you wear shoes at home, we recommend a pair that is for the house only. Leave your outside shoes at the door. If you have slippers, consider a pair with some arch support. Being barefoot is good for foot function and strength but don't walk barefoot if it hurts.

Have an ingrown toenail? Here is a simple solution. The Onyfix nail system is a nail brace that guides the nail to be flatter as it grows out. It is a quick and painless application and typically lasts for a few months. This works best for curved nails that aren't inflamed or infected. Schedule your Onyfix consult today with Dr. Westfall at 541-728-0858.

It's almost the end of sandal season. As your put shoes away for the season, here are a few recommendations. Clean them with a cloth. Polish them if they are leather. Have a shoe repair shop fix any issues with the straps or soles before you store them. If they didn't fit well this season, it's time to pass them on.

Shoes getting a little worn out? It's time to replace your shoes if they are feeling too tight, starting to get holes, the tread is worn down, or they are uncomfortable. Shoes don't last forever. We recommend new exercise shoes every 300-500 miles. We recommend new casual and dress shoes every 1-2 years depending on how often you wear them. Most people use their old shoes to garden and do yardwork. That is fine unless they hurt your feet or rub and cause blisters or sores.
