How Does Optomap® Help Identify Early Signs of Eye Disease?

Many eye diseases can develop silently, showing no obvious symptoms until damage has already occurred. At SpecialEyes Eyecare, we utilize advanced diagnostic technology like the Optomap® retinal imaging system to help identify issues at their earliest stages on patients of all ages.

What Is Optomap®?

Optomap® is a revolutionary imaging technology that captures a wide, high-resolution view of your retina in a single scan. Unlike traditional methods that often reveal a limited portion of the retina, Optomap® allows us to see up to 80% of the retina in one panoramic image. This comprehensive view enhances our ability to catch issues that might otherwise remain hidden during standard exams.

How Optomap® Detects Early Signs of Eye Disease

The retina plays a critical role in your vision. By examining your retinal health with Optomap®, our optometrists can identify early indicators of many issues, some examples of which are:
Diabetic Retinopathy - Small leaks from retinal blood vessels can be spotted before vision is affected.
Glaucoma - Subtle changes in the optic nerve head may signal the onset of this sight-stealing condition.
Macular Degeneration - Early detection of macular damage helps prevent progression.
Retinal holes, Detachments or Tears - These occur at any age and can be caught early before causing severe vision loss.

Benefits of Choosing Optomap® Imaging

Non-invasive and comfortable - No eye drops and no discomfort. Vision is unaffected afterwards.
Quick results - The scan only takes seconds and images are available immediately.
Patient education - You can view the images alongside your doctor, making it easier to understand your eye health.
Long-term tracking - Images are stored securely, allowing us to compare changes in your retina over time.

Take Control of Your Eye Health

Your eyesight is one of your most valuable assets, and protecting it starts with advanced diagnostic care. Optomap® technology gives our team the ability to detect potential problems earlier, leading to faster treatment and better outcomes.

Help your child see a brighter future.

September is recognized as Myopia Action Month, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about childhood myopia (nearsightedness) and the steps we can take to manage it.

As parents, we all want the best for our children—including a future where they can see clearly and thrive. Myopia is becoming more common in kids, often starting earlier and progressing faster than ever before. Beyond the need for stronger glasses, unchecked myopia can increase the risk of serious eye conditions later in life.

The good news is: we can do something about it!

At SpecialEyes Eyecare, we offer treatments that can slow the progression of myopia, such as:

-Specialized contact lenses
-Prescription eye drops
-Simple lifestyle tips to support healthy vision

How you can help right now:
-Make sure your child has their annual eye exam.
-Ask us about personalized myopia management options.
-Use this month as a reminder that small steps today can make a big difference in your child’s future.

📅 Book your child’s eye exam today and join us in taking action this September.

The Benefits of a Contact Lens Exam

If you are considering making the switch from glasses to contact lenses, you’re in the right place! Whether you're hiking the local trails, commuting to work, or simply want the freedom of clear vision without glasses, contact lenses can offer a convenient and comfortable solution.

But before you decide, it's important to schedule a professional contact lens exam to ensure contacts are the right fit for your eyes and lifestyle.

Why a Contact Lens Exam Is Essential
A contact lens exam is different from a regular eye exam. While a standard eye exam assesses your overall vision and eye health, a contact lens exam goes a step further. It includes specific measurements and evaluations to ensure that lenses will fit comfortably and provide clear, stable vision.

Personalized Fit
Contacts must sit correctly on your eye’s surface to be effective and safe. During the exam, your eye doctor will measure the curvature of your cornea, check your pupil size, and evaluate your tear film. These details help determine which type of contact lens will provide the best fit and comfort.

Eye Health Assessment
Even if you’ve worn contacts in the past, your eye health can change over time. An exam helps identify any conditions such as dry eye, allergies, or corneal irregularities that may affect your ability to wear contacts comfortably or safely.

Lifestyle Matching
Are you active? Do you spend long hours on digital devices? Different contact lenses are designed for different needs. Our doctors will discuss your lifestyle and vision goals to recommend the best type of contact lenses, whether that is daily disposable lenses, toric lenses for astigmatism, or multifocal lenses.

Small steps, big impact.

We're proud to share how we’re doing our part to protect the planet—and how you can join us!

Did you know that contact lenses and their blister packs are often too small to be processed through regular recycling systems? That’s why we’ve partnered with Bausch + Lomb's TerraCycle program to collect and responsibly recycle contact lenses, blister packs, and foil tops—keeping them out of landfills and helping reduce environmental impact. Our office has recycled over 350 pounds to date!

How You Can Help: Simply drop off your used contact lenses and packaging at our office. We’ll handle the rest, ensuring they’re properly recycled through a sustainable, Earth-friendly process.

Together, we can make a difference—one lens at a time. Let’s keep our vision clear and our planet cleaner.

Happy belated Earth Day from all of us at SpecialEyes Eyecare!

April is Women's Eye Health and Safety Month!

Why the focus on women?
Because two-thirds of all blindness and visual impairment occurs in women, according to the National Eye Institute. Women are disproportionately affected by eye conditions such as:

👁️ Dry Eye Syndrome – More common in women, especially after menopause
👁️ Cataracts – Women are at higher risk due to longevity and hormonal factors
👁️ Age-related Macular Degeneration – One of the leading causes of vision loss in older women
👁️ Glaucoma – Often goes undetected and progresses faster in women

In addition to biological risk factors, women also tend to be the primary caregivers—often putting the health of others before their own. This month is a great reminder to prioritize your own eye health and encourage the women in your life to do the same.

At SpecialEyes Eyecare, we’re raising awareness about the importance of preventive eye care. Take a moment to schedule your eye exam by clicking the link below and let our amazing team of all-women doctors help you see clearly and stay healthy!

Your Eyes Might Play Tricks, But Your Vision Shouldn’t!

April Fools’ Day is all about playful pranks —but if your vision feels blurry or strained, it's not a joke!

Vision changes can happen gradually, making it hard to notice when you need an updated prescription.
If you spend hours on screens (like most of us do!), you may experience headaches, dryness, or fatigue caused by digital eye strain.
And don’t forget—UV rays don’t take a break when the seasons change! Protecting your eyes in spring and summer is important.

Book your eye exam today to make sure your vision is sharp and your eyes are healthy.

What happens in a comprehensive eye exam and why you need one

Routine eye exams are an essential part of maintaining your overall health and wellness, yet they often go overlooked. At SpecialEyes Eyecare, we believe your vision deserves the best care, which is why comprehensive eye exams are at the heart of what we do.

These thorough evaluations are designed not only to ensure clear vision but also to detect potential eye and health issues early.

A comprehensive eye exam is more than just checking your prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

It’s a multi-step process that evaluates the overall health of your eyes and can uncover underlying health conditions. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

Medical and Vision History Review: Your optometrist will ask about your medical history, current medications, and any vision issues you’ve experienced. Understanding your history helps us tailor the exam to your specific needs.

Visual Acuity Test: This is the part of the exam where you’ll read letters from a chart to determine how well you can see at various distances. It helps assess the clarity of your vision.

Refraction Test: To fine-tune your prescription, your optometrist will use a device called a phoropter. This process helps identify the exact lens strength needed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

Eye Movement and Alignment Tests: Your optometrist will evaluate how well your eyes work together. Poor coordination or alignment can cause headaches or eye strain, especially during tasks like reading or working on a computer.

Eye Pressure Measurement (Tonometry): This painless test checks the pressure inside your eyes, which is an important factor in diagnosing glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness.

Retinal Examination: Using advanced tools, your optometrist will examine the back of your eye, including the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. This step can detect signs of eye diseases like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more.

Screening for Systemic Health Conditions: Comprehensive eye exams can reveal early signs of systemic health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or even certain neurological conditions. Your eyes can offer valuable insights into your overall health.

Why You Need a Comprehensive Eye Exam Every Year

While you may think your vision is fine, many eye conditions develop silently, showing no symptoms in their early stages. Regular comprehensive eye exams can help detect issues before they become severe, offering a chance for early intervention and better outcomes. Additionally, if you spend long hours in front of digital screens or have a family history of eye problems, routine exams are even more crucial.

Beyond preserving your vision, eye exams can safeguard your overall health. Early detection of conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol can prompt timely treatment and prevent complications.

Schedule Your Eye Exam Today

Your eyes are one of your most valuable assets, and they deserve proactive care. A comprehensive eye exam is not just about seeing clearly—it’s about protecting your vision and your health for the long term.
