Hot Off the Press: 2026 ADAO March eNewsletter
This month reflects both progress and urgency in the fight to prevent asbestos exposure.
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley is championing the 21st Senate Asbestos Awareness Week Resolution (April 1–7), reinforcing bipartisan recognition that asbestos remains a serious public health threat.
Our March update also highlights:
▪️ Global Asbestos Awareness Week (April 1–7) — uniting partners worldwide to advance prevention and education
▪️ Warrior Candle Lighting — honoring those impacted by asbestos-related disease
▪️ ADAO heading to the Fifth Circuit Court to defend EPA’s authority to regulate chrysotile asbestos under TSCA
Nearly 40,000 Americans die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Prevention requires science, enforcement, and sustained legislative action.

February is Cancer Prevention Month, and this issue focuses on one of the most preventable causes of cancer: asbestos exposure. Despite decades of scientific evidence, asbestos continues to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other fatal diseases—making prevention, transparency, and accountability essential to public health.

In our February President’s Message, we highlight how prevention must be paired with strong enforcement of the law. ADAO continues to lead on prevention, policy, and legal action—advancing a dual strategy that includes regulatory oversight, litigation, and legislative solutions such as the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now (ARBAN) Act, because regulation alone cannot eliminate this carcinogen.

This issue also covers:
• Congressional oversight seeking transparency around the October 2025 East Wing demolition by Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici.
• Ongoing opposition to efforts that weaken chemical safety under TSCA
• Our comprehensive asbestos policy timelines tracking key U.S. regulatory milestones
• Preparations for Global Asbestos Awareness Week (April 1–7, 2026) — “Asbestos: One Word. One Week. One World.”
We are deeply grateful to our 2026 Distinguished Sponsors—whose leadership makes this work possible—and proud to recognize their continued commitment to prevention, policy, and accountability.

February is a call to action. Asbestos-caused diseases are entirely preventable—but only if we act together.

Curious Why ADAO Filed a FOIA Lawsuit Over Asbestos Protections During the White House East Wing Demolition -- the answer is! Prevention depends on transparency, regulatory compliance, and accountability. The public deserves answers.

Today, ADAO filed a federal FOIA lawsuit seeking records on asbestos inspection, abatement, and disposal during the October 2025 demolition of the White House East Wing.

After more than two months of unanswered FOIA requests, this action seeks basic documentation that federal law requires when older and historic buildings—likely to contain legacy asbestos—are demolished. Transparency and documented safeguards are essential to protect workers, the public, and public trust.

As reported in today’s Washington Post, this case is about prevention, accountability, and ensuring the same health and safety standards apply to everyone.

Prevention only works when it is practiced.

As 2025 comes to a close, many of us are reflecting on the wins and losses that shaped the year—and the same is true for the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO).

From raising urgent questions about the White House East Wing demolition and unanswered requirements for inspections, to honoring lives lost to , the reintroduction of the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act, and confronting other asbestos-caused diseases, this year underscored a hard truth: asbestos remains a serious and ongoing public health threat.

ADAO’s new year-end blog brings together the moments that defined 2025—national media attention on federal safety lapses, Jordan Zevon’s powerful reminder of the human cost of this work, and the 20th Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference, carrying forward Dr. Selikoff’s legacy of science, prevention, and justice.

The eNewsletter also looks ahead to 2026, including updated Top Ten Facts About Asbestos Exposure, new sponsorship opportunities, and our continued commitment to Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month to help protect the heroes who protect us.

Read, reflect, and stand with us as we continue the work of prevention, transparency, and justice. ADAO sincerely thanks all who supported our efforts, especially our Platinum Sponsors: Dean Omar Branham Shirley, LLP and Simmons Hanly Conroy LLP, Gold Sponsors: The Gori Law Firm and Motley Rice LLC and Silver Sponsor Early, Lucarelli, Sweeney & Meisenkothen.
