Bisphosphonates are typically the first treatment for osteopenia, and the most commonly prescribed medication for the condition.

If you're initially at very high risk for fracture and remain at high risk, you might keep taking one of these medications for up to 10 years.

For many people, osteoporosis is an invisible disease and getting a DXA scan is the only way to determine whether your bone density is low.

That said, there are 2 visible signs that you or someone you know might have osteoporosis:

* Loss of height by 4cm or more
* Stooped or hunched posture with a forward, rounded upper back

If you have noticed these changes in yourself or someone else, it may be worth a visit to the doctor to determine if you or your loved one has osteoporosis.
