Turns out brushing your teeth is important for lots of reasons, including preventing constipation according to a study published in Japan: "The study found that children who brushed their teeth less frequently had a higher prevalence of constipation than those who maintained regular brushing habits"

It is important to set healthy limits on screen time, especially as "doom scrolling" seems to be on the rise. The AAP Center of Excellence on Social Media and Youth Mental Health has developed an updated approach to help parents navigate digital media that focuses on “the 5 C’s”: Child, Content, Calm, Crowding out and Communication. Here are some helpful links:

Sleep plays an important role in concussion recovery, the latest research published in March 2025 indicates that “limiting naps during the day and getting about seven hours of sleep each night in the first week after a concussion appears to speed up recuperation” in children. Researchers observed that “getting seven hours of sleep each night doubled a child’s chances of recovering quickly during the first week after a concussion,” but “every hour spent napping during the daytime decreased by 12% the likelihood their concussion symptoms would diminish within the first week.”

Sunday March 30 is Doctor's Day, and your doctors at PWG wanted to share some thoughts about why being a pediatrician is simply THE BEST! Dr. Niki here sharing my thoughts:
I've been privileged to be a part of the story of your child's journey from baby to adult since I began my career in 1996, and every single day there is *at least* one moment of joy that I file away in my memory for a rainy day. You've been the reason why I love being a doctor, thank you!

Sunday March 30 is Doctor's Day, and your doctors at PWG wanted to share some thoughts about why being a pediatrician is simply THE BEST! Here is Dr. Leslie Sue with her observations:
"I started practicing at PWG in 2011 so a lot of my practice is hitting their growth spurts. Recently I had a 13yo come in and want to measure against me back to back right away. Sure enough, he had passed me up! He was thrilled but mom had tears in her eyes. “I remember when he would fit on the baby scale!” Like they say, the days are long but the years are short. This is why I love pediatrics."

Sunday March 30 is Doctor's Day, and your doctors at PWG wanted to share some thoughts about why being a pediatrician is simply THE BEST! Here is Dr. Roma Shah at her med school graduation telling us about one of her favorite memories:
One of my favorite moments of being a pediatrician was when a patient was telling me about the Spider-Man themed party he was going to have for his birthday. We talked about how cool that was and how I also liked Spider-Man and the other Avengers. He then looked at his mom and asked, “Can Dr. Shah come to my birthday party? She loves Spider-Man too!” It was so funny and sweet.

Taking probiotics can shorten the duration of a fever according to a recent study:
“A probiotic mixture reduced fever duration among young children with upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), a placebo-controlled trial from Italy showed.” Researchers found that “among 128 children treated at a pediatric emergency department, the median fever duration was 3 days in the probiotic group compared with 5 days in the placebo group.” Meanwhile, “adverse events, including constipation and abdominal pain, were mild, and did not significantly differ between the two groups.”

We've been getting questions about who needs a measles booster since measles cases are currently on the rise. The American Academy of Pediatrics has great information for parents here: https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/immunizations/Pages/how-to-protect-your-children-during-a-measles-outbreak.aspx #:~:text=When%20do%20children%20need%20to,again%20at%204%2D6%20years.

Here's some helpful info from the WSJ 3/17/25 article:
https://www.wsj.com/health/wellness/measles-cases-vaccine-booster-what-to-know-167a104b?mod=health_trendingnow_article_pos1

If you were born before 1957: You are considered protected because measles was so widespread that you were undoubtedly infected as a child. (Don’t doubt your foggy memory, you probably wouldn’t remember since most people got it as children.)
If you were born between 1957 and 1962: The guidance is unclear. Doctors say many of these people either had measles, or got the vaccine as young children when it came out in 1963. Try checking your records. There is no downside in getting a new shot if you are unsure.
If you were born between 1963 and 1967 and you received an inactivated version of the vaccine—which wasn’t very effective: You should get the current MMR vaccine.
If you were born between 1963 and 1989 and got one dose of the vaccine: You are protected in most circumstances and don’t need a second dose. (I’ll elaborate on special circumstances below.)
If you were born after 1989 and your parents followed the standard vaccine schedule: You got two doses of the vaccine and can sit pretty (until recent years, vaccine exemptions for kindergartners were rare). Rest assured, you are very protected.
Dr. Paul Offit, professor of pediatrics in the division of infectious diseases at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, says if you were born between 1963 and 1967 and can’t track down which version of the vaccine you got, it’s a good idea to get vaccinated again.

The recent measles outbreaks have many parents concerned. Most of the people who have gotten sick were not vaccinated against measles. This is a stark reminder of the importance of making sure your children are fully vaccinated. Learn more here.
