It’s not "just a cleaning”.
It’s a medical assessment.

If you think an appointment with a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) is just about "scraping teeth", you’re only seeing 4% of the picture.

❌The Proposed Shortcut: Programs like the OPA model require only 120 hours of instruction.

✅The Professional Standard: A CODA-accredited RDH completes around 3,000 hours of combined didactic and clinical work.

Why should you care? That extra 2,880 hours isn’t for "polishing." It’s for Microbiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, and an array of biomedical sciences.

If it’s "just a cleaning," why is your RDH trained to:
✨ Perform life-saving Oral Cancer and HPV screenings?
✨ Conduct Breathing and Airway assessments for sleep apnea?
✨ Identify Systemic Inflammation linked to Diabetes, Stroke, and Alzheimer’s?
✨ Assess for Social Determinants of Health that impact your total wellness?

Don’t settle for a 4% standard. Demand a provider who has the education to protect your life, not just your smile.

Ask your provider today: "Are you CODA-accredited?"

Saliva is so important!

Saliva is so important!

Most people chew gum for breath. Dentists recommend it for a different reason.

Dentists often recommend sugar-free gum because chewing rapidly stimulates saliva — your mouth’s natural defense system. Saliva helps wash away food debris, dilute harmful acids, and protect tooth enamel after eating.

This saliva surge neutralizes plaque acids that temporarily soften enamel. It also delivers calcium and phosphate, essential minerals that support enamel remineralization and help strengthen vulnerable tooth surfaces.

Gums sweetened with xylitol offer added benefits. Xylitol disrupts cavity-causing bacteria, reducing their ability to grow and stick to teeth, supporting a healthier oral biofilm.

Chew one piece for about 20 minutes after meals, especially when brushing isn’t possible. Choose products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance — and remember, sugar-free gum supports oral health but never replaces brushing and flossing.

Did your dentist ever recommend this to you?

Looking for a unique and thoughtful gift idea this Christmas?
How about giving the gift of dental care! It may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of holiday presents, but it’s a practical and meaningful way to show you care about someone’s health and well-being.

One unique dental care gift option is an electric toothbrush. With advanced features like different cleaning modes, timers, and pressure sensors, these devices can help ensure a thorough and effective clean every time. They’re also great for anyone who struggles with manual brushing techniques or has limited dexterity.

Another creative idea is a water flosser. These handy devices use a stream of pulsating water to remove plaque and debris from between teeth and along the gumline. They’re perfect for those who find traditional flossing difficult or uncomfortable.

For those who enjoy taking care of their smile on-the-go, consider travel-sized oral hygiene kits. These compact kits typically include a travel toothbrush, mini toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss in a convenient carrying case. They’re ideal for frequent travelers or anyone who wants to maintain their oral hygiene routine while away from home.

Last but not least consider purchasing a dental hygiene visit for your loved one. Contact me for details and give the gift of a healthy smile🦷🪥

What a difference a professional dental visit can make! We often say "cleaning" but what dental hygienists provide is so much more. We evaluate all aspects of your health. The proper term should be Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy. Not sure if that will ever catch on with the public but I don't mind being your "cleaning lady" 🦷🪥
