đź’™ Cone Health President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mary Jo Cagle, has decided to step down from her role due to a serious family health matter. Her last day at Cone Health will be May 31, 2025.

“It has been a joy and privilege to lead this system. I’m incredibly proud of all we’ve accomplished to increase access to care, enhance patient safety and care quality,” Cagle said. “The future is bright as Cone Health leverages new approaches, capabilities and data to make proactive wellness care affordable and accessible for all.”

Cagle is notably the first woman and the first physician to serve as CEO at Cone Health. She led Cone Health through the COVID-19 pandemic and was a driving force in Cone Health becoming part of RisantHealth. Her leadership has been instrumental in prioritizing value-based care and ensuring better health care for all.

Just last week, Cagle was named one of Modern Healthcare’s Leading Women of 2025. She was previously named a Grassroots Champion by the American Hospital Association and one of the 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives by Modern Healthcare. She was also named one of Triad Business Journal’s C-Suite Award winners and Power Players. Under her leadership, Cone Health has also been named by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top hospitals in 2024–2025 as well as a Best Regional Hospital for Equitable Access.

Bernard “Bernie” Sherry, who has served as Cone Health’s Interim Chief Operating Officer since December 2024, will serve as Interim Chief Executive Officer beginning June 1, 2025, following Dr. Cagle’s departure. The new Chief Operating Officer is expected to be named in the weeks ahead.

Cone Health has initiated a nationwide search for the next Cone Health CEO.

💜 Colon Cancer Survivor, Mark Graves is throwing the at the Greensboro Grasshoppers next Friday! ⚾️🧢

đź’ś Mark Graves was likely in the early stages of colon cancer--when it's most treatable--but it was the early days of the pandemic and his regularly scheduled colonoscopy was canceled. Mark moved on with his life.

⏰ By the time he rescheduled in April 2022, Mark and his wife Vanessa’s lives were changed forever. Mark was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer.

🔬 “I had no symptoms and felt a hundred percent great,” says Mark about the day of his belated colonoscopy. “If my experience can tell people one thing, it’s to get your colonoscopy when it’s recommended – check your colon! Had I gotten it done earlier, my story may have turned out very differently.”

💜 Mark's wife Vanessa, who works in the medical field, recalls researching colorectal surgeons, which led the couple to Dr. Alicia Thomas: “Up front and honest, she turned out to be one the best surgeons I could have ever imagined.”

🏥 Not only did Dr. Thomas successfully remove the cancerous portion of Mark’s colon, but the handoff to Dr. Brad Sherrill, a Cone Health oncologist, was expedient. Even as Mark continued working full-time, he completed six months of chemotherapy: “Dr. Sherrill is an exceptional physician with over 25 years of experience, which is evident in his patient care. He and his team were so accommodating, caring and thorough. I was treated like I was the only patient they had.”

🔔 Today, Mark is cancer free. By following doctors’ orders and relying on their shared faith to stay positive, the couple believes they made the “best decisions” when it came to their dream medical team: “We thank God every day for life, and we are so very grateful for Dr. Malcolm Stark, Dr. Alicia Thomas and Dr. Brad Sherrill for their extraordinary care.”

Don't wait to get screened. Visit conehealth.com/cancer.

🥳⚾ Cheer on Mark for next week's Greensboro Grasshoppers first pitch!

A new stainless-steel sculpture shimmers in the Cone Health Cancer Center at Wesley Long Hospital Healing Gardens. The 12 ft. tree was created by Greensboro artist and cancer survivor Lawrence Feir in memory of Dr. Bill Bowman.

When Dr. Bowman died unexpectedly in 2021, 87 family and friends donated money for a memorial. Since Bowman spent every Thursday at the healing garden. there was little doubt where the memorial should go.

Feir is a cancer survivor who wanted to express his thanks for the care and compassion of staff. Between chemotherapy and radiation treatments in 2018, he found refuge in the tranquil gardens, sketching trees.

"I wanted to give back to all the doctors, nurses and patients who supported me through a very difficult time. They saved my life,” says Feir. “It was an honor to be selected to create a sculpture in memory of Dr. Bowman.”

Gay Bowman is thrilled with the result honoring her late husband who was a prominent Greensboro surgeon for 30 years. To Gay, the windswept, plasma cut branches carry a necessary reminder of not to stop when times get tough — but to move through them. “That was hard,” says Gay reflecting on the loss of Bill. “That’s what we want for the patients and families, to find hope, peace and tranquility, and to move forward.”

There is a staggering 80/20 rule in health and wellness: Research shows that clinical care accounts for 20% of what determines health, while 80% is determined by factors such as your diet and exercise, your physical environment, where you live, or whether or not you have a strong support system.

With your help, Cone Health provides support for both aspects of health to underserved communities. We couldn't do it without you. Thank you.
