It’s social work month!! Not sure what social work is? Just take a look at Lone Oak. This is social work in action. Created, founded, and led by social workers with graduate and doctoral degrees in the field. We follow a set of ethics and values laid out by the NASW and have woven these values and ethics into everything we do at Lone Oak. So if you’ve been to the barn, received a service, volunteered, donated, and/or been part of our community in any way - you have experienced social work and know social workers! What appears seamless has been carefully and thoughtfully created for you by your local community social workers - Heather Girvin, Ph.D, MSS, Abigail Wilson, DSW, LSW, and Shannon Wittlinger, MSW. It doesn’t stop there! We have social work volunteers, interns, and partners that also help us do what we do. Thank you to all of our social workers, you know who you are!!!

Happy 2nd Birthday to Lavender! She’s grown quite a bit since we got her at 8 months old! Lavie is now almost as big as Huey, Atlas, and Samson. Horses continue to grow until they are about 6 years old. Lavie enjoys being with her herd, playing with Story, eating, sleeping, and being groomed. She is currently learning work on the lunge line and in the round pen. Lavie is a perfect, playful 2 year old!

We wrapped up our Journey with Joy program today with ba****ck riding and reflection. We overcame fears, found some joy, and created a community of women that will stay in touch beyond this program. As we shared, the journey isn’t never over, but we are well equipped with tools to keep joy at the forefront. Thank you to all that participated in this innovative program!

Our community has expressed concerns about an upcoming, local auction that is about to happen. We’ve had it on our radar and have been in communication with the host. Based on what we know so far and through our understanding of pre-bidding that as of now it looks like every mini horse or pony will have a home. However, we have asked to be contacted if a sale falls through or a pony doesn’t have a place due to injury or other reasons. We would be more than happy to protect one if needed. Thank you to everyone for reaching out, sharing, tagging!

Our sweet girl Lucy is now available for adoption! Lucy joined us last year after being found as a stray. The more we learn about Lucy, the more we’ve come to understand that she would do much better in a loving home than at the barn. This was not an easy decision as we love her so much, and we are looking for a forever home for her. Lucy is about 5 years old and about 8-9lbs. She’s a small girl with a loud voice! She does use the litter box when she’s in a home and would prefer a low stress environment where she is the only cat OR has plenty of space for alone time if she needs it. Lucy is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. If you are interested, please reach out to us via direct message!x

The most challenging part of creating joy is our awareness that its companions are sadness and loss. And so the challenge for all of us is to hold both: the joy and the sadness, especially the sadness experienced by those we love. Many of our community members are facing challenges or loss: mourning loved ones, battling disease, and bearing up under incredible caregiving responsibilities.
