My mom used to say, “don’t borrow trouble.”
As a teenager, I found that advice… irritating at best.
It felt impossible not to worry about everything that could happen.
Now, through practice, I hear it differently.
In yoga philosophy, I think of Satya (truth) and Asteya (non-stealing).
When I spiral into “what ifs,” I’m leaving truth—and borrowing from a future that isn’t here.
Taking on stress that doesn’t belong to this moment.
Stealing from my own steadiness.
These days, “don’t borrow trouble” feels less like a rule…
and more like a practice.
Coming back.
Breath by breath.
