You know what’s frustrating?

Being able to do something easily one day…
and then not being able to start it at all the next.

Same task.
Same person.

Completely different experience.

That inconsistency trips a lot of people up.

But for many adults with ADHD,
it’s not inconsistency in effort.

It’s inconsistency in access.

Access to focus.
Access to energy.
Access to starting.

And when that access isn’t there…

pushing harder usually isn’t the answer.

Not because you don’t care.
Not because you’re not trying.

But because your brain isn’t able to meet you there in that moment.

And that’s a very different problem to solve.

Some days look productive on the outside…
but feel heavy on the inside.

And sometimes the work isn’t just checking things off a list…
it’s staying with something when your brain wants to walk away.

Progress doesn’t always look clean or linear.
Sometimes it looks like showing up anyway.

That counts too.

When everything feels overwhelming…
it’s not that you don’t care.
And it’s not that you’re not trying.

Sometimes your brain just doesn’t know where to start.

And when everything feels big…
even small things can feel impossible.

What can help isn’t pushing harder…
it’s making things smaller.

Not “clean the whole house” - clear one surface
Not “finish the project” - open the document
Not “figure everything out” - take one tiny step

It might feel almost too small to matter…
but that’s often where things begin.

Ever feel like you know exactly what needs to be done…
but starting still feels almost impossible?

That’s not laziness.
And it’s not a lack of effort.

For many ADHD brains, the hardest part isn’t knowing what to do…
it’s getting started.

When everything feels big or overwhelming, even simple tasks can feel out of reach.

Sometimes what helps isn’t trying harder…
but making things smaller, clearer, or more concrete.

It can take some experimentation…
but it is possible to find approaches that work with your brain.

Libbi’s version of staying on task 🐾

She carries her ball all the way home so she doesn’t get distracted.

And every once in a while… she checks in to make sure I’m still there.

For ADHD brains, having something to anchor your attention ~ and knowing you’re not doing it alone ~ can make all the difference.

03/19/2026

One of the biggest misconceptions about ADHD is that it’s a problem with attention.

But more often, it’s a challenge with starting.

You can know exactly what needs to be done…
and still feel completely unable to begin.

That’s because ADHD affects the brain’s ability to initiate tasks, not just focus on them.

It’s not about willpower.
It’s about how your brain regulates action.

When people understand this shift, something important happens:

They stop blaming themselves.

And that’s often where real change begins.

Ever have one of those days where you want to get things done, but your brain just won’t cooperate?

You’re not distracted by something fun.
You’re not choosing to avoid it.
You’re just… stuck.

That’s something many adults with ADHD experience, and it can be really frustrating, especially when it doesn’t match how capable you know you are.

One of the things I often talk about in ADHD coaching is this:

It’s not about trying harder.
It’s about understanding how your brain works and finding ways to work with it instead of constantly feeling like you’re fighting against it.

If that experience sounds familiar, you’re not alone 💜

Ever feel like you can take on big challenges or complex projects… but somehow replying to an email, organizing your day, or starting a simple task feels almost impossible?

That experience is surprisingly common for people with ADHD.

Sierra Dragonfly Center is now offering ADHD coaching in addition to therapy services.

ADHD coaching focuses on helping people better understand how their brain works and develop strategies that support things like overwhelm, focus, follow-through, and the day-to-day challenges that often come with ADHD.

For many people, a diagnosis of ADHD isn’t the end of the story… it’s the beginning of learning how to work with their brain instead of constantly feeling like they’re fighting against it.

If you or someone you know might benefit from ADHD coaching support, we’d love to connect.
