One of the saddest parts of end-of-life care is that many family members simply don’t know what they’re doing. Out of fear or misinformation, they may refuse necessary medications because they believe morphine will hasten death, or they try to force food and water when the body is no longer able to process them.
As an end-of-life caregiver, I’ve witnessed far too many people suffer unnecessarily because their loved ones weren’t educated about the dying process. Hospice provides an incredible layer of support, but they cannot be present every moment.
I truly wish there were more funding and resources so that every family could have an experienced caregiver with them throughout the process. Someone who could guide, educate, and help ensure comfort and dignity at the end of life.
