Today marks 35 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law!

On July 26, 1990, the ADA became a landmark moment in civil rights history, breaking down barriers, opening doors, and empowering millions of Americans with disabilities to live with greater dignity, independence, and inclusion.

Let’s honor the advocates, lawmakers, and everyday citizens who fought for access and equity and continue that work today. Equality is not a destination; it’s a promise we must keep advancing.

07/26/2025

Today is the ADA’s 35th anniversary! On this day, 35 years ago, the landmark legislation was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush to ensure all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

The AUCD Network is proud to honor and celebrate continues its work across the country to ensure that people with disabilities have access, inclusion, and opportunity to fully participate in their communities.

Let’s celebrate progress and keep pushing forward.

Changing Spaces Awareness Day — July 26! 🎉

Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in community life with dignity, inclusion, and respect. But across the U.S., millions of families and caregivers lack access to safe, private, and hygienic spaces to assist a loved one with toileting or personal care in public.

Standard accessible restrooms often fall short—especially for the over 250,000 people in the U.S. with profound and multiple disabilities. That’s where Changing Places come in.

These inclusive facilities are thoughtfully designed with:
✔️ An adult-sized changing bench
✔️ A ceiling or mobile hoist system
✔️ Additional space for caregivers to assist safely and comfortably

These features can mean the difference between staying home or being part of everyday life.
Let’s raise awareness. Let’s advocate for more Changing Places facilities. Let’s work toward a future where accessibility includes everyone.

UCEDDs have supported people with disabilities for over 60 years, but now their future is at stake. They’re in danger of losing their independence, putting vital disability services, research, and training at risk. Take 2 minutes to tell Congress: protect and fully fund UCEDDs in FY26.

UCEDDs have been advancing disability rights for over 60 years. Now, they’re at risk—and we need your help. The FY26 budget proposal calls for eliminating UCEDDs as independent programs. This threatens:

• Services for people with disabilities
• Disability research and training
• State and federal partnerships
• Compliance with the DD Act

We must protect the independence and impact of UCEDDs. Contact your Senators and Representatives today and urge them to protect UCEDDs!

AUCD has launched an easy-to-use grassroots action tool that enables individuals, families, professionals, and allies to contact their Members of Congress and urge them to reject this harmful proposal and fully fund UCEDDs in FY 2026.

Thank you Congresswoman Susie Lee for your tireless work!

Last week, we had the honor of meeting with Congresswoman Susie Lee alongside fellow disability leaders from across Nevada. Joining me were Kate Osti, Executive Director of the Nevada Disability Advocacy and Law Center NDALC; Dr. Randall Owen, Executive Director of the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities; and one of Dr. Owen’s outstanding PhD students.

We had a powerful conversation about the needs of Nevadans with intellectual and developmental disabilities and the importance of protecting the programs and services they rely on.

We’re especially grateful to Congresswoman Lee for her time, her deep commitment to the people of Nevada, and her unwavering leadership in standing against the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act." This legislation poses serious threats to disability services nationwide, and her advocacy helps ensure that the voices of those most impacted are heard and protected.

Thank you, Congresswoman Lee, for being a champion for equity, inclusion, and the disability community.

🔥GOT A MEDICAID STORY YOU CAN SHARE? 💥

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto would like to amplify stories of Nevadans, and Americans across the country, who will be impacted by Republicans’ reconciliation bill and its cuts to Medicaid, food assistance, and other critical programs.

If you are willing to share your story about how you would be impacted, please record a short video and upload it with this form for her to amplify online. Your video may be published on social media, or used as reference for speeches and other media to spread the word far and wide about how Americans will be impacted by this legislation.
