Contrary to popular belief, pain with s3x doesn’t discriminate!

While this type of pain can be triggered following the labor/birth experience, there are many individuals of all genders who experience pain with s3x that has nothing to do with giving birth.

There are MANY reasons for this to start happening outside of birth and postpartum healing, like…

→ Frequent UTI’s
→ Vaginal dryness or other skin conditions in the area
→ Hormonal changes (perimenopause or menopause)
→ Increase in pelvic tension
→ Trauma
→ Lumbar spinal issues
→ And other!

Sometimes it can feel hard to understand why you’re experiencing what you’re experiencing when you can’t relate it back to a single or significant event in your life…it can make you feel like maybe you’re making it up or maybe it will just go away as fast as it came on.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the case and if you’re looking for help in this area, here at Advanced Pelvic and Spine PT we are specifically trained to evaluate and treat these pelvic concerns in a holistic, caring and respectful way. Book online with either Jenni or Wendy or give our office a call!

I think it’s natural to think that if you’re experiencing some sort of pelvic floor dysfunction that that must mean that there’s something going on with your pelvic floor...I mean, duh, right?? 🧐

But maybe counter-intuitively, that’s not always the case, and in fact, the SPINE can be the driver behind your pelvic floor symptoms such as 👇

💦 urinary urgency
💦 urinary leakage
💦 urinary retention (difficulty emptying your bladder)
⚡️ changes in sensation in the ge****ls
💩 f***l incontinence
💩 bowel urgency
⚠️ erectile dysfunction

And maybe even less commonly known is that you don’t even have to have back pain to have these pelvic floor symptoms that are spine-related 🤯

Yes, you read that right…

You could absolutely be experiencing some pelvic floor dysfunctions (listed above 👆) that originated from the spine while having zero spinal symptoms!

So, you might be wondering how would you even know that you need to address the spine if this were the case??

That’s where we come in 🙋‍♀️

Your first visit with us is spent evaluating and assessing, not just the pelvic floor, but the full-body to determine the driving factors and developing a treatment plan to help you move forward positively!

It’s nice to start to see a shift in understanding of the importance of pelvic health. In the words of Taylor Swift, “It’s been a long time coming!” 💃

It truly is amazing that more people are understanding the need and significance for pelvic health in those who are pregnant or postpartum! But what I don’t see quite as much, is the discussion around other groups of people who ALSO frequently require pelvic health.

In particular…those who are perimenopause, in menopause or post-menopause. This is a group of people who often times get overlooked and without the discussion around it, can feel isolating when they do start to experience pelvic symptoms.

Let’s keep the conversation going and bring awareness to ALL groups of people who may require pelvic health, which…SPOILER ALERT…can be ALL PEOPLE WITH A PELVIC FLOOR! 🙌

In an effort to spread awareness, make sure to follow my account for a little more education on all types of people in different phases of life who may need pelvic floor physical therapy.

What this means for your pelvic floor is that those muscles will ALSO experience that loss of muscle mass…because they are muscles just like any other muscle in your body.

And what might the effects of weak pelvic floor muscles mean??
⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️

⭐️ Urinary incontinence
⭐️ F***l incontinence
⭐️ Prolapse
⭐️ Reduced sensation during in*******se
⭐️ Pain with in*******se
⭐️ Difficulty with orgasming
⭐️ And a slew of other issues that may occur due to the original issue of a weak pelvic floor

So, what can be done about this??

The good news here is that there is a lot that can be done to combat this muscle weakness that often goes hand in hand with perimenopause and menopause.

An individualized and holistic evaluation and assessment would be a great place to start to see what your body needs to increase muscle mass and combat these symptoms!

Trying to figure out where to start when it comes to foundational core stability and strength?

I’ve got three stability and foundational activities for you to try when you want to get started on the right foot.

1. Diaphragmatic breathing 🫁 - you’d think breathing is automatic, but it actually requires practice and technique to get it right!

2. Combining 👆 (breathing) with “bracing” - again, this requires a lot of thought and intentionality to get the coordination down, but once you’ve got it, it can become second nature and really help to protect your back when you’re doing other activities.

3. Pallof Press 💪 - you want to perform this slowly and with great control! You can start off in full kneel, then half kneel and then progress into standing as your technique and confidence improves!

Looking for help with your core strength and stability? We are here to help at Advanced Pelvic and Spine Physical Therapy! Give us a call or check out our website at pelvicspinept.com.

We would be remiss if we were to ignore core strengthening just because we don’t believe that it is the “reason” for the low back pain (refer back to one of our previous posts about what the research has to say about core weakness CAUSING low back pain), because we also know that low back pain often LEADS to core weakness.

Our core is at the very center of our being, and it’s foundational strength is crucial for being able enjoy movement. When low back pain begins to rear it’s ugly head, that often can lead to more sedentary choices, which in turn leads to generalized weakness, but particularly core muscle weakness.

In order to combat this, physical therapy will focus on core stabilization exercises and learning movement patterns that are tolerable and will benefit you long-term. While a complete PT/rehab program should have many different facets to it, core stabilization exercises should absolutely be included!

Needing some ideas for foundational core stability movements? Keep your eyes peeled 👀 for our next post 😉

The fact that it is MORE common for low back pain to be caused by more than one thing is exactly why a holistic approach (to any condition, really) is extremely important.

If we were to only focus on the low back during treatment for low back pain, then we may be missing some other contributing factors, such as posture, gait pattern, repetitive motions performed throughout their day, an old injury that may have caused some compensatory changes, just to name a few.

The point is, it is the physical therapist’s job to determine as many contributing factors as possible behind the low back pain issue and develop a treatment plan to address those factors. And this means that a holistic approach is absolutely necessary to finding those contributing factors 🙌

Struggling with back or neck pain? Tired of the bandaid approach? Advanced Pelvic and Spine is here for you!

Labor, birth and early postpartum are arguably some of the most taxing experiences physically, mentally and emotionally your body will likely ever go through.

Think of it from the perspective of a first-time marathoner…if you signed up for your first marathon, wouldn’t you want to prepare your mind and body for the event? Or would you simply show up on the day and do your best with the 26.2 miles?

I think most of us would want to prepare for an event that is going to be extremely challenging and will push you to a point that it likely has never been before, right? Which is why Birth Prep is so vital!

Birth prep is amazing for preparing you for both the physical and mental side of labor, birth and going into postpartum. Our pelvic floor PT’s will develop a movement plan specific to you, incorporate various tools and techniques for pain management and teach you how to work with your body through the various stages you will go through!
