In a landmark initiative to combat veteran and national homelessness, over 50 mayors from across the United States are gearing up for a pivotal gathering in the nation's capital. Spearheaded by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) Task Force on Homelessness, and joined by USCM President Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, this bipartisan coalition is set to champion comprehensive solutions during a series of high-stakes meetings in Washington, D.C.
The USCM Task Force on Homelessness has meticulously crafted a three-part legislative agenda aimed at addressing the root causes of homelessness. With a focus on inclusivity and support for vulnerable populations, the mayors will advocate for pivotal changes, including expanding housing voucher eligibility to encompass veterans. This crucial step aims to alleviate the burdens faced by veterans, ensuring they no longer have to grapple with the agonizing choice between essential disability benefits and secure housing.
Moreover, the mayors are steadfast in their resolve to dismantle barriers to affordable housing construction by urging the removal of caps on project-based vouchers. This strategic move will grant cities much-needed flexibility in bolstering their affordable housing stock, a vital component in combating homelessness nationwide. Additionally, the coalition will fervently lobby for increased funding for housing choice vouchers, recognizing the pivotal role these resources play in providing stability and support to individuals and families in need.
Mayor Bass underscored the imperative of collaborative action in tackling the homelessness crisis, expressing gratitude to President Biden's administration and bipartisan members of Congress for their unwavering support. "In order to effect tangible change in addressing the greatest crisis facing Los Angeles and hundreds of cities across the country, we must continue to work hand in hand with leaders nationwide," stated Bass. She extended heartfelt appreciation to President Biden and Congress for their resolute partnership in this critical endeavor.
Notably, the mayors will convene for a press conference on Tuesday, April 30, at the House Triangle on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol Building, sponsored by House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Ranking Member Mark Takano. This gathering will serve as a platform to amplify their advocacy efforts and underscore the urgent need for decisive action to combat homelessness.
The advocacy fly-in will feature a series of pivotal meetings with key stakeholders, including U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, among others. These engagements highlight the breadth and depth of the coalition's advocacy, spanning critical areas of government and policy.
This historic initiative underscores the unwavering commitment of mayors from diverse communities nationwide to address homelessness comprehensively and compassionately. With nearly 50 mayors representing states nationwide, including Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve's esteemed presence, this gathering signifies a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight against homelessness. From Sunday evening to Wednesday, these leaders will unite resolutely to effect meaningful change and build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
