Flu season can be rough for kids, but a quick annual shot can help prevent serious illness, missed school days, and trips to the ER.

The flu vaccine is safe, updated each year, and available for children 6 months and older. It takes 2-4 weeks to become fully effective, so early fall is the perfect time to schedule.

You may schedule using the patient portal or call us today to book your child’s flu shot. For patients with Medicaid or uninsured, we do not have flu shots available yet - we will announce when they come in. We will also be running a flu clinic on Saturday October 18th, which will be convenient for working parents and school age children. Please reach out on the portal if you would like to have an appointment on that Saturday.

Not sure if your child’s symptoms require urgent care?

Start with us.

As your medical home, we know your child’s history and can often provide same-day guidance or visits for issues like fevers, coughs, ear pain, or minor injuries. Unlike urgent care, we offer continuity and follow-up and often save you the time and cost of unnecessary visits.

We’re your first stop for both reassurance and medical support.

Call us first when your child isn’t feeling well. We’ll guide you on next steps and we’re always happy to help. For after hours, you can still call us and the on-call pediatrician can guide you on whether it will be okay to wait to schedule a sick visit the next day.

Many teens are eager to try the latest skincare trends, but not all products are designed for young, sensitive skin.

The best skincare routines and products are simple and gentle. Look for non-comedogenic products (which won’t clog pores), fragrance-free options to reduce irritation, and daily use of SPF even in winter months. A good cleanser and light moisturizer are often all a teen needs to start.

We recommend products such as CeraVe and Cetaphil for a gentle wash and their moisturizing products as well.

If your teen is struggling with acne or sensitive skin, we can help create a skin care routine that is specifically tailored to their skin type. Call today to schedule an appointment.

Did you know Hispanic and Latino communities represent over 60 million people in the U.S. - with vibrant traditions like Día de los Niños, posadas, and quinceañeras?

Día de los Niños (Children’s Day) is celebrated in many Latin American countries to honor and cherish children. In Mexico, it’s often marked with school parties, games, music, and special treats—focusing on joy, learning, and making kids feel valued.

Posadas are traditional celebrations in the nine days before Christmas, reenacting Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter. Families and friends gather for processions, singing, prayer, and breaking star-shaped piñatas filled with candy, symbolizing joy and the triumph of good over evil.

Quinceañeras mark a girl’s fifteenth birthday and her transition from childhood to young womanhood. This milestone is often celebrated with a religious ceremony, followed by a lively party with dancing, food, and symbolic traditions such as changing from flats to high heels or presenting a “last doll.”

These traditions celebrate the importance of family, community, and milestones in a child’s life.

Share your favorite tradition with us in the comments!

Heat stroke can be life-threatening and babies, toddlers, and teens show different warning signs.

- Infants may show flushed skin, rapid breathing, or lethargy.

- Toddlers may be irritable, confused, or stop sweating.

- Teens often push through heat during sports - watch for dizziness, nausea, or altered behavior.

Always carry water and take shade breaks when outdoors. If traveling with younger children, make sure to check the back seat when getting out of the car.

Also, keep your car locked when unoccupied to ensure children do not climb in and get stuck. A child can die from heatstroke in a car within minutes, even when the outside temperature is as mild as 65°F.

Hormonal changes, stress, and growing independence can all contribute to mood swings during the teen years.

Occasional irritability, frustration, or sadness is normal, but if your teen’s mood changes are extreme, persistent, or affect daily life, it may be time to check in.

During well visits and as needed, we screen for signs of depression and anxiety to help identify emotional concerns early.

Are you concerned about your teen’s emotional health? Call Ponderosa Pediatrics so we can help you decide if further support is needed.

If your newborn’s eye is watery or has a bit of discharge, it may be a blocked tear duct. A blocked tear duct is a common and usually harmless condition. Most clear up on their own by 12 months.

To care for the clogged tear duct, gentle pressure in the corner of the eye 2-3 times a day with a warm rag can help.

Signs of infection could include redness of the white part of your newborn’s eye or redness and swelling of the eyelid.

Unsure if your newborn has a normal clogged tear duct or if it is infected? Call us today to schedule an appointment.

It’s common for teens to shift friend groups as they grow, explore new interests, or navigate social changes. These transitions can be confusing or even upsetting, but they’re a normal part of adolescence.

Parents can support friendship changes by staying informed, encouraging healthy peer interactions, and taking the opportunity to meet new friends when possible.

Let us know if you’d like to talk about how to support your teen through it. We also understand teens may need a space to talk things out without parents too. Please schedule an appointment to discuss any personal or social concerns.
