Around nine months, many babies are becoming more active, curious, and interactive with the world around them.

While every child develops at their own pace, there are several common milestones parents may begin to notice during this stage.

Common nine month milestones may include:
- Sitting without support
- Crawling or scooting to move around
- Pulling up to stand while holding onto furniture
- Forming sounds like “mamama” or “bababa”
- Responding to their name
- Showing interest in objects by reaching, grabbing, or passing items between hands

Remember that development can vary from baby to baby, and some skills appear earlier or later than others.

If you have questions about your child’s development or milestones, talk with Dr. Frazee so concerns can be reviewed together.

Choosing sunscreen doesn’t have to be confusing!

Look for SPF 30 or higher, apply generously, and reapply every two hours, or sooner if swimming or sweating. Mineral sunscreens (ingredients typically are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) are often well tolerated for sensitive skin.

Remember to pair sunscreen with hats, shade, and protective clothing for the best coverage.

For infants younger than 6 months, consult with your provider prior to using any sunscreen products.

Questions about sunscreen or skin sensitivity? Send a portal message to Ponderosa Pediatrics so we can help keep your child’s skin safe.

Siblings play an important role in helping children develop social and emotional skills like communication, teamwork, and problem solving. While sibling relationships may include the occasional disagreement, they also create lifelong bonds, shared experiences, and plenty of memories.

Today we are celebrating National Siblings Day by highlighting members of our team and their siblings.

Take a look at some of the people who help care for your families and the siblings who helped shape them along the way.

Enjoy these photos of our staff and their siblings, and feel free to share a favorite memory with your own sibling in the comments.

Occasionally, a newborn may have a small fracture of the clavicle (collarbone) that occurs during delivery. This can happen during more difficult births, especially when a baby’s shoulders are tight in the birth canal. While this can sound alarming, most newborn clavicle fractures heal very well on their own.

Common signs may include decreased movement of one arm, fussiness when that arm is moved, or a small bump along the collarbone as it heals.

Treatment usually focuses on comfort. Gentle handling, supporting the arm during dressing, and avoiding pressure on the affected side can help while the bone heals. Most fractures improve within a few weeks.

Contact Dr. Frazee if your baby seems to have significant pain, swelling that worsens, limited arm movement that does not improve, or if you have any concerns about healing.

Wishing all of our families a happy and peaceful Easter.

Holidays are a wonderful time for children to enjoy traditions like egg hunts, family meals, and time together.

As you celebrate, keep safety in mind by supervising younger children during egg hunts and helping them pace candy and treats throughout the day.

Small reminders like checking candy for choking hazards and encouraging water and regular meals can help everyone enjoy the day comfortably.

We hope your family has a joyful Easter. What is your favorite Easter tradition? Share in the comments.

Polio was once one of the most feared diseases affecting children. Before vaccines were available, thousands of children each year developed paralysis, and some required iron lungs to help them breathe.

Communities experienced outbreaks that caused lifelong disability and, in some cases, death.

The development of the polio vaccine in the 1950s dramatically changed the course of this disease.

Widespread vaccination led to a rapid decline in cases, and polio has now been eliminated in most parts of the world.

Vaccination continues to be important to keep polio from returning. Keeping children up to date on recommended immunizations helps protect both individuals and communities from diseases that once caused serious harm.

If you are unsure whether your child is up to date on vaccines, call or send a portal message and we can review their immunization record.

April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to recognize and support individuals on the autism spectrum and promote understanding and inclusion in our communities.

Autism is a developmental condition that can affect communication, social interaction, and behavior, and every child’s strengths and challenges are unique.

Early support and services can make a meaningful difference for many children and families. Resources such as Autism Speaks and the Autism Society provide educational materials, support networks, and guidance for navigating therapies and services. Local early intervention programs and school-based services can also play an important role in supporting development.

If you have questions about developmental concerns or autism resources, speak with Dr. Frazee to learn about services and support available in your area.

Having one medical home means your child’s care stays connected.

We coordinate well visits, sick visits, chronic condition management, school forms, mental health follow-ups, and specialist referrals all within Ponderosa Pediatrics. We also have after hours care available to keep care under one roof as much as possible.

When everything runs through one team, we can see the full picture, track patterns over time, reduce duplicate testing, and communicate clearly with outside providers.

This continuity improves safety, strengthens relationships, and makes care more convenient for families.

Have questions about coordinating your child’s care? Send Dr. Frazee a portal message or call our office.

Many children who eat a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, and dairy (or fortified alternatives) get the nutrients they need from food alone.

Vitamins may be helpful for children who are very selective eaters, follow restricted diets, have certain medical conditions, or have known deficiencies such as low iron or vitamin D.

More isn’t always better - some supplements can cause side effects or provide more than a child needs. It’s important to make sure the dose and type are appropriate for your child’s age and health history.

Your child’s wellness visit is an excellent time to discuss if vitamins are needed.

A preventive visit (well visit) focuses on routine care such as growth and development, vaccines, screenings, and age-appropriate guidance.

A problem-focused visit addresses specific concerns like ongoing symptoms, new illnesses, behavior concerns, medication adjustments, or chronic condition management.

If new or significant medical issues are discussed and evaluated during a preventive visit, both services are billed. This is because the time, medical decision-making, and documentation required for addressing a problem go beyond routine preventive care.

Understanding the difference helps avoid surprises and ensures concerns are fully addressed.

Ask about visit types and billing ahead of time so you know what to expect. Do not hesitate to reach out.

Is your toddler a picky eater?

Picky eating is very common in toddlers and often part of normal development. Many children need multiple exposures to a new food before they’re willing to try it.

Eating together as a family, offering the same meal for everyone (with at least one “safe” food), and letting your child decide whether and how much to eat can help build healthier habits over time.

Try to avoid pressure, bargaining, or forcing bites as these strategies often increase resistance rather than reduce it.

If you’re worried about your toddler’s growth, nutrition, or food variety, schedule a visit so we can review patterns and offer tips and tricks to help.

Vitamin D is essential for healthy bone growth and development.

Most breastfed babies need 400 IU of vitamin D per day, since breast milk alone doesn’t provide enough. This is usually given as daily vitamin D drops directly to the baby.

Because dosing matters, families should not start vitamin D supplements, either for baby or parent, without clear instructions from their care team.

Questions about vitamin D drops supplementation? Ask us at your newborn visit.
