Teens, listen up!

It’s no secret that scrolling through social media can make anyone compare themselves to others. For teen girls, this constant comparison is linked to rising rates of anxiety and depression, with studies showing a significant increase over the past decade.

Remember: most social media highlights filtered, edited, or staged moments are not real life. Your worth isn’t measured by likes, followers, or the way someone else looks. Focus on things that make you feel strong, confident, and happy, whether that’s spending time with friends, being creative, or practicing self-care.

Tip: Take breaks from scrolling, unfollow accounts that make you feel bad, and follow people or pages that inspire you instead.

Dr. Frazee is here to help if you are feeling anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed.

There’s no quick fix to “boost” immunity.

Vaccines, adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, handwashing, and managing stress are the real immune supporters. Supplements alone can’t replace these basics.

While it’s normal for young children to get frequent colds, signs that may suggest a weakened immune system include unusually frequent or severe infections, infections that are hard to clear, poor growth, or needing repeated courses of antibiotics.

Do you have concerns about your child’s immune system? We are here to help.

Around the middle of the school year, many kids start to feel tired, bored, or unmotivated which is a completely normal phase known as the “mid-year slump.”

To help keep them on track, set small, achievable goals each week and celebrate progress, no matter how little. Mix up routines with fun study breaks, educational games, or hands-on projects to keep learning engaging.

Encourage your child to stay active, get plenty of sleep, and talk about any frustrations because they’ll be more motivated when they feel supported. Remind them that progress isn’t always linear, and even small steps count toward big achievements.

Have your kids experienced this mid-year slump? If so, what have you found that helped get them through? Share with us below.

By 4 months, many babies are showing exciting signs of growth and development! This age is Dr. Frazee's favorite!

While every baby develops at their own pace, here are some common milestones to look for:

Physical & Motor:
- Holds head steady without support
- Pushes up on arms during tummy time
- Begins to roll from tummy to back
- Reaches for and shakes toys

Social & Emotional:
- Smiles spontaneously, especially at familiar faces
- Laughs and squeals with delight
- Enjoys playing with parents and caregivers

Cognitive & Communication:
- Begins babbling and mimicking sounds
- Shows curiosity about surroundings
- Follows moving objects with eyes

Dr. Frazee will assess and discuss your baby’s development at every wellness visit.

You can call our office or send a portal message to request a wellness visit.

Brushing your toddler’s teeth doesn’t have to be a battle. It can be a fun part of the day!

Try singing a favorite two-minute song while brushing, using colorful or character-themed toothbrushes and flavored toothpaste, or turning it into a story about sugar bugs being chased away.

Brushing together can also help, letting your little one watch and imitate you. You can even use a sticker chart or small reward to celebrate successful brushing sessions. Making it playful helps set the stage for healthy habits that last a lifetime.

Remember to schedule your child’s dental visit every 6 months once they are a year of age.

If you need help finding a pediatric dentist, call our office or send Dr. Frazee a portal message so we can help.

Keeping your baby safe while they sleep is one of the most important things you can do in the first year.

For newborns, always place your baby on their back in a firm, flat sleep surface with no pillows, blankets, toys, or bumper pads. A fitted sheet in a crib, bassinet, or play yard is safest.

As your baby begins to roll over on their own, usually around 4–6 months, continue placing them on their back to start each sleep. Once they can roll both ways independently, start sleep on their back; it’s okay to let them find their own position, but keep the sleep area clear and safe.

Other tips:
- Room-sharing without bed-sharing can reduce the risk of sleep-related accidents.
- Keep the sleep space smoke-free.
- Offer a pacifier at nap and bedtime if your baby is receptive.

Do you need help with creating a safe sleep environment for your baby? We are here to help!

Before vaccines, diphtheria was a leading cause of childhood death. It caused severe throat infection and a thick membrane that could block breathing earning the name “the strangling angel.”

The diphtheria vaccine, now part of the routine DTaP series, dramatically reduced cases and is safe, well-studied, and closely monitored. Most side effects are mild, like arm or leg soreness or low-grade fever.

Why don’t we hear about diphtheria anymore? Because vaccines work so well, but the bacteria still exists. If vaccination rates drop, diphtheria can return, putting children and vulnerable people at risk.

Call our office today to ensure your child is up to date on their DTaP vaccine.

Cold air can trigger asthma symptoms by irritating airways.

Using scarves over the mouth, following action plans, and pre-treatment when advised can help reduce flares.

If your child is needing to use their rescue inhaler more, has a nighttime cough, or shortness of breath with low impact activities, they need to be seen by their pediatrician.

Review your child’s asthma plan this season and call our office to ensure they are up to date on their asthma medication follow up.

Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects, affecting about 1 in 100 babies. These can range from simple issues that may resolve on their own to more complex defects that require ongoing care or surgery.

Early detection is key. Many CHDs are spotted before birth on a prenatal ultrasound, but some aren’t obvious until after delivery. That’s why newborns receive a CHD screening in the nursery, which uses a painless pulse oximetry test to check oxygen levels in the blood. This simple test can help catch serious heart problems early, when treatment is most effective.

Parents know the signs: rapid breathing, blue-tinted lips or skin, poor feeding, or excessive tiredness may warrant prompt evaluation.

Awareness saves lives. Share this post to help more families learn about CHD and the importance of newborn screening.

Black physicians and researchers have shaped pediatric care through innovation, advocacy, and leadership. Representation in medicine builds trust and improves care for families.

A few we want to highlight include:

- Dr. Natalia Tanner: Achieved milestones as the first Black woman board-certified pediatrician and first to receive an AAP fellowship.

- Vivien Thomas: A surgical technician and pioneer who, despite immense racism, developed techniques for pediatric heart surgery with Dr. Alfred Blalock, saving countless young lives.

- Dr. Doris Wethers: A hematologist known for her groundbreaking work in sickle cell disease, advocating for newborn screening and improving outcomes for children, mentoring many Black physicians.
