Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed patches, especially in young children. While it can be linked to allergies or sensitivities to foods, fabrics, or environmental triggers, not all cases of eczema are allergy-related.

To decrease the amount of eczema flares, keep the skin moisturized with fragrance-free ointments or creams (lotions not as beneficial), avoid long hot baths, and dress your child in soft, breathable fabrics. Identifying and avoiding triggers like certain soaps, foods, or allergens can help too.

Eczema can often improve with prescription topical steroid creams.

A balanced lunch helps kids stay focused and energized throughout the school day. Aim to include a protein (like turkey, beans, or cheese), a fruit or vegetable, a whole grain, and a healthy fat.

Don’t forget a water bottle to stay hydrated. Small portions of treats are okay, but try to limit sugary drinks and processed snacks.

Here is a fun snack that you can include in your child’s lunchbox this school year:

No-Bake Peanut Butter Energy Bites

Ingredients:
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup natural peanut butter
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
- 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed or chia seeds
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:
1) Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl.
2) Stir until well mixed.
3) Roll into small 1-inch balls.
4) Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving.

These bites are packed with protein and fiber—perfect for lunchboxes or after-school snacks!

Allergy note: You can substitute sunflower seed butter or almond butter if needed.

As the school year approaches, it’s important to start easing kids back into a consistent sleep schedule. Begin adjusting bedtime and wake-up times gradually about 15 minutes earlier every few days until they match the school routine. Keep bedtime calm by limiting screens in the hour before sleep and establishing a predictable wind-down routine like reading or a warm bath.

Consistent wake-up times, even on weekends, help regulate your child’s internal clock and make mornings less stressful.

Some fun, but appropriate pre-bedtime activities include reading, writing, drawing, building legos, and meditation.

If your child is still struggling with sleep despite these strategies, Dr. Frazee can help identify underlying issues and offer tailored solutions based on their age and development.

Feeling nervous about the new school year is normal for both kids and parents.

Some worry is expected, but if your child experiences trouble sleeping, frequent tummy aches, or major clinginess, it could be anxiety. Start routines early, talk openly about their feelings, and validate their concerns. Small steps like visiting the school beforehand and letting them pick out fun items off their school list can make a big difference.

What’s your child most excited (or nervous) about for the new year? Or as Dr. Frazee calls it “Nervcited” (nervous and excited at the same time).

As your child ages, the vaccines they received during infancy and toddlerhood begin to have decreased levels in their immune system so boosters are needed.

School-age kids need important boosters such as Tdap, MMR, and varicella. These vaccines prevent diseases like whooping cough and measles, which can still pose risks in school communities.

Staying up to date keeps everyone safe.

Call our office today to make sure your child is ready for the school year with all required vaccines or send us a message through the portal.

Time to size up?

When your toddler has diarrhea, here’s what you can do:

- Keep them hydrated - offer small sips of water or oral rehydration solution.

- Avoid sugary drinks and juices.

- Continue feeding them bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, but add some good protein such as baked skinless chicken.

Call us if it lasts more than 7 days, there's blood in the stool, or signs of dehydration.

Know the signs.

Early recognition can save a life.

Here are some red flags to watch for in teens: withdrawal from friends or activities they once enjoyed, changes in sleep or eating habits, talking about feeling hopeless or like a burden, giving away belongings or saying goodbye, sudden changes in mood or behavior, or a sudden drop in grades.

If you see these signs, don’t wait.

Lice happens and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

These tiny bugs spread easily through shared items like hats, brushes, or close contact. If your child is scratching their scalp more than usual or you spot tiny white nits (eggs), it's time to check.

Over-the-counter treatments and thorough combing usually do the trick. If you are unsure about using OTC treatments, we can prescribe treatments you can do at home.

To prevent reinfestation after lice, wash bedding, clothing, and hats in hot water and dry on high heat after two days of treatment. Sealing non-washable items in a plastic bag for two weeks is an option, but typically not necessary.

Wondering if it’s normal your newborn hasn’t p**ped today?

Newborn p**ping patterns vary. In the early weeks, all babies tend to stool every day. As your infant gets older (usually around 1 month of age), they may begin to have changes in their stooling frequency. Breastfed babies can go up to 7 days without stooling while formula fed babies tend to stool every 3-5 days. What matters most is stool consistency and comfort.

Call us if your baby seems uncomfortable, has a hard belly, refusing feeds, or projectile spitting.

Dr. Frazee at Ponderosa Pediatrics is here for those “is this normal?” questions.

Summer freedom often means later bedtimes, but sleep routines still matter. Kids thrive on consistency, even during vacation.

Try keeping wake-up and bedtime within an hour of their usual school-year schedule. A calming bedtime routine and screens off 1 hour before sleep can make a big difference.
