A quick "brain break" for you, as my kids' school likes to call it:

Sitting up tall, take a slow breath in and a long breath out. Continue breathing until you can breath in to a count of 4 and breathe out to a count of 4. Try a few breaths like that, and then add a pause for a count of 2-4 in between your inhale and exhale. 5 rounds of counting your breath, then see how you feel! Happy Tuesday :)

"What can you do with 5 good minutes?

5 good minutes of:

-pushups is a solid workout
-sprints will leave you winded
-writing can deliver 1 good page
-reading can finish an insightful article
-meditation can reset your mood

You don’t need more time—just a little focused action."

Love this :) Stay focused out there with all this at-home time!

The VA has developed an app called PTSD Coach, which incorporates breathing exercises, body scans, etc, a lot of which we use in trauma-informed yoga! It also allows you to track your symptoms and progress to see what is/isn't working for you. Check it out!

What a crazy time we live in! However, there is still much good and peace to be found amidst the chaos. I am currently offering virtual trauma-informed yoga classes, for groups or individuals, with the hope of offering an hour of stillness and healing for those that need it. Please message me if you are interested!

Police work and mindfulness? Read how it helped a CA police department handle the daily stress of their jobs.

https://www.acesconnection.com/blog/san-bruno-pd-trained-up-on-tackling-trauma-with-mindfulness-and-resilience

When Officer John Hampton of the San Bruno Police Department in San Bruno, CA, first heard that mindfulness training was being offered to him and his fellow cops, he had two reactions. John Hampton “I think my major reaction was: ‘Oh, there’s some hippy thing that they’re trying to get cops ...

Check out this great article on how CA firefighters are using mindfulness as a way to prevent and cope with the daily stress of their jobs.

The deadly threats of fighting California’s wildfires go beyond the smoke and the flames for firefighters. Other, equally dangerous perils often exact heavy toll on the bodies and minds of first responders.

Explains what we are trying to do-
"The objective of trauma-sensitive therapy is not to access emotions or dredge up trauma memories, but rather to help clients heighten their body awareness—to notice what is happening inside their bodies—and thereby learn to release tension, reduce and control fear and arousal, and tolerate sensation" -Kate Jackson

Why trauma-sensitive yoga?

“No one can ‘treat’ a war, or abuse, r**e, molestation, or any other horrendous event, for that matter; what has happened cannot be undone. But what can be dealt with are the imprints of the trauma on body, mind, and soul: the crushing sensations in your chest that you label as anxiety or depression; the fear of losing control; always being on alert for danger or rejection; the self-loathing; the nightmares and flashbacks; the fog that keeps you from staying on task and from engaging fully in what you are doing; being unable to fully open your heart to another human being.

Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going on inside ourselves.” – Bessel Van Der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score

A trauma-sensitive space to breathe

Welcome to Just Breathe Yoga! Yoga has been a passion of mine for the past 12 years. After completing my RYT-200 through YogaFit, I attended a training for yoga for PTSD, and realized the potential that trauma-sensitive yoga has to be a tool in healing, while also seeing the lack of knowledge about and accessibility to it. I went on to complete the YogaFit for Warriors program, which is specifically trauma-sensitive yoga, and am now trying to bring awareness of it to the community I love and grew up in. I currently teach at-risk youth in the community with Urban Lotus Project, and am hoping to bring this model to adults in the community as well.
