What I Buy at the Grocery Store When Someone in My House Gets Sick! 🤧
When illness moves through a household, most people immediately think of medications or supplements.
But one of the most powerful places to start is much simpler: the grocery store.
As an integrative medical provider — and a mom of four — I’ve learned that supporting the body early with hydration, nutrients, and simple whole foods can make a meaningful difference in how quickly someone recovers and how severe symptoms become.
One of the most overlooked nutrients during illness is vitamin C. Most people associate vitamin C with oranges. But oranges are actually far from the richest sources.
Some of the most vitamin C–dense foods include red bell peppers, kiwi, parsley, broccoli, and berries — often containing significantly more vitamin C per serving than citrus fruit 🫐
One of the first things I recommend to patients — and use in my own home — is coconut water. Coconut water provides natural electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium without the dyes, artificial sweeteners, or additives found in many commercial sports drinks. Proper hydration supports cellular function, immune response, and recovery.
Bone broth is another staple. It provides easily absorbable minerals and amino acids that support gut lining integrity and immune function. The gut plays a central role in immune regulation, and supporting it during illness can help improve overall recovery 🥣
One of the most reassuring things I remind patients is that the immune system is remarkably capable. Often, the most effective approach is not to override it, but to support it.
Hydration. Rest. Nutrient-dense foods. Time.
