Join us for our Black Moms Connect online support group!

This group is for anyone pregnant or postpartum (up to two years) and identifies as Black or African-American. There is no definition or level of being “Black enough.” Pregnant and postpartum moms with a biological connection to the African diaspora (African Americans, Afro-Caribbeans, Afro-Latin Americans, Black Canadians, etc.) are welcomed. This is a space for Black mothers to connect, discuss their experiences, and learn helpful tools and resources. Whether you are going through stress, adjustment to parenting, baby blues, pregnancy, or postpartum depression/anxiety, our groups are here for you. You are not alone, and we are here to help.

There is a solid amount of money available for BIPOC people who want to become midwives. Now is the time!

NACPM’s federal advocacy has resulted in historic funding to grow the midwife of color workforce. In 2019, NACPM worked with Congress to include midwifery training programs in the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) program, ensuring for the first time that MEAC-accredited schools would be eligible for federal funding through this program.

This year alone, Bastyr University’s midwifery program will award $900,000 in scholarships through a grant from the SDS program!

The SDS program is administered by the federal agency, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and is authorized under Title VII of the Public Health Service Act on a five-year grant cycle. Additional funding has been appropriated for the program and for midwifery schools in subsequent years, including an additional $1,500,000 for midwifery training in 2022. The primary goal of this funding is to increase the number of midwifery graduates working in underserved communities and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, including students of color.

TW: podcast contains birth trauma, descriptions of a traumatic birth, obstetric violence, mentions of SA.
Consent, respect, and safety should all be characteristics of pregnancy care and birth, but they are often missing, and even worse, birthing people may experience obstetric violence. This podcast episode from Tuning In From Within highlights how very different birth experiences can be when care is trauma informed and consent based, specifically, the midwifery model of care.
And if you think onstetric violence doesn't happen here, the first traumatic birth discussed happened here in Reno. We have a long way to go.

In the United States, it's common for people giving birth in hospitals to experience a lack of consent and be denied the opportunity to play an active role in their birth experience. Oftentimes, this leads to what is called 'obstetric violence.'  Tune in t...
