A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, a part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it requires, so brain cells die. A common way to spot symptoms of a stroke is to remember the word FAST:

F: Facial drooping, like one side of the face drooping or being numb
A: Arm weakness or numbness, such as one arm drifting downward when raising both arms
S: Speech difficulties, such as slurred speech, being unable to speak, or being hard to understand
T: Time to call emergency services, like 911

Other stroke symptoms can include sudden numbness, confusion, trouble seeing, trouble walking, or a severe headache. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 and get to the nearest emergency room.

We want to recognize two of our employees for achieving "Employee of the Month" at both our hospital and our medical group. We are shining a light on Jayne and Teresa for this exciting accomplishment!

Here are just a few of the nomination comments that were submitted on these employees:

Jayne – "Well, to start - I have never seen somebody hustle the way she does. After my procedure, she was in my room every half hour, all night, taking care of business. She controlled the pain so well, it made me have a great experience. Very outgoing and funny, made the time here so much easier." (comment from a patient!)

Teresa – "We had an issue with a denial from one of our payers on a Medicaid claim, and Teresa immediately contacted the payer for an explanation, and we were able to resolve the issue before it became a timely filing denial with no appeal rights. She is always willing to help as needed and seeks further clarification if needed to ensure that the team is working effectively!"

Congratulations to you both for being nominated and selected as our Employees of the Month. Saint Mary's Health Network is proud to have you on our team and helping to provide the best care and service to our community!

It's , so we're here to bring you a health-conscious tip for your overall well-being!

"The best gift you can give yourself during the holidays is better health! Do your best to stay active and eat healthy, both of which can lead to reduced feelings of anxiety."

The holidays and the cold can make people anxious or even bring on seasonal depression. Staying active however you can, doing your best to make good food choices, or even planning activities that don’t involve eating can help with managing the stress often felt this time of year.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and want to start with a medical professional on tips to manage stress during this time, you can also schedule an appointment with one of our primary care clinicians, visit us at www.saintmarysreno.com/primarycare, or give our team a call at 775-770-7664.
