The Luminary Leadership Award honors exceptional leadership and dedication towards achieving our mission here at Saint Mary's. The third recipient of our Luminary Leadership Award is Julie, our Emergency Department director! Julie has had several nominations submitted on her behalf, and here are some of the kind words that have made her deserving of this recognition:

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, a part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it requires, so brain cells die. A common way to spot symptoms of a stroke is to remember the word FAST:

F: Facial drooping, like one side of the face drooping or being numb
A: Arm weakness or numbness, such as one arm drifting downward when raising both arms
S: Speech difficulties, such as slurred speech, being unable to speak, or being hard to understand
T: Time to call emergency services, like 911

Other stroke symptoms can include sudden numbness, confusion, trouble seeing, trouble walking, or a severe headache. If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 and get to the nearest emergency room.

Last week, we welcomed over 25 vendors into our hospital to help provide education on resources for our patients who have left the hospital setting. Many times after discharging from a hospital bed, patients go home and can need extra assistance, whether it's in-home care, transportation, infusion services, senior living facilities, or even hospice care.

These organizations support patients all throughout northern Nevada, and we were happy to host them. Many provided snacks and other treats for our staff, too, in addition to the vital education they offer.

We are always happy to host events like this for our team, as it gives staff an opportunity to learn about critical resources that are offered in our community. Thank you to all of the organizations who came to support our team!

• Jaw pain or back pain
• Anxiety
• Nausea or vomiting
• Chest pressure, squeezing, aching, or burning
• Shortness of breath
• Pain that travels down one or both arms

Early heart attack care can be life saving, and it involves recognizing the symptoms and risk factors, calling 9-1-1, and performing hands-only CPR when possible.
