April is Stress Awareness Month, focusing attention on your health and how can learn successful coping strategies for dealing with life stressors.

Stress is something everyone experiences, often many times throughout the day.

The good news: Stress is a normal and healthy reaction that occurs when we feel threatened, uncertain, or overwhelmed.

More good news: Even the smallest steps taken each day toward stress reduction can
significantly improve metal and emotional well-being over time.

Little by little, a little becomes a lot.

From the desk of Jasper County Public Health Nurse-

With all the activities and stressors that follow a natural disaster, it is easy to forget about your health! Here are some helpful suggestions from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention).

· Be aware of exhaustion. Set priorities and pace yourself. Get plenty of rest!

· Drink plenty of clean water.

· Eat well.

· Wear sturdy shoes and gloves when cleaning up debris.

· Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water often.

· Are you up to date on your immunizations? Consider getting a Td (tetanus and diphtheria) booster if it has been 10 years since your last immunization. The Jasper County Health Department offers vaccines for all ages! Call for an appointment!

· Make sure children are up to date with their vaccines.

Health includes your mental health. The emotional toll that disaster brings can sometimes be even more devastating than the financial strains of damage and loss of home, business, or property. Everyone who sees or experiences a disaster is affected by it in some way. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) offers these suggestions:

· It is normal to feel anxious about your own safety and that of your family and close friends.

· Profound sadness, grief, and anger are normal reactions to an abnormal event.

· Acknowledging your feelings helps you recover.

· Focusing on your strengths and abilities helps you heal.

· Accepting help from community programs and resources is healthy.

· Everyone has different needs and different ways of coping.

It is normal to need time to recover and get back to normal. If you find yourself reliving the traumatic experience, having trouble functioning on your regular tasks at work or at home, or withdrawing from relationships, get in touch with a counselor, therapist, or doctor for help.

If you or someone you know is thinking about hurting self or others, get help immediately! Call or text 988. Help is available 24/7/365. Also, you can reach out to your medical provider or call the Jasper County Health Department- 219-866-4621.

Our thoughts are with all affected by this disaster!
