Ayurveda is the traditional Indian approach to physical well-being, and views health as a balance of the four fundamental components of life: mind, body, soul, and senses. With the central aim of illuminating the intimate connection between one’s external and internal worlds, Ayurveda examines the whole individual - diet, lifestyle, environmental location and climate, stage of life, time of year, and interpersonal relationships - as factors in wellness or dis-ease.
Yoga is the ancient technique of creating mental stability and clarity through the use of various modes. Yoga study often starts with postures, which are becoming well-known in the West, but offers guidance on many and deeper levels. The link between the breath and the mind is particularly important, for Yoga is truly about reshaping one’s self. To that end, chanting and study of Yoga philosophy support the physical techniques with the aim of creating a meditation practice so that deeply ingrained habits - physical, mental, emotional - can be transformed..
Sarah Nelson, Certified Yoga Teacher
Sarah Nelson has been teaching Yoga for 20 years. She is well-versed in both the physical and philosophical aspects of Yoga practice, and she is skilled at bringing Yoga philosophy to life through practice. Sarah has been exposed to various traditions, including a teacher training at Sivananda, but she has been devoted to the Krishnamacharya/Desikachar lineage since she encountered it in 2000, and was certified to teach in this tradition by Yoga for Well-Being. Sarah uses Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras to inform her teaching of both group classes and private lessons. She has also studied various texts including the Bhagavad Gita and various parts of the Upanishads. Sarah has had a dedicated personal practice for many years, and uses Yoga to guide all aspects of her life. She continues her studies with Martine Burat and Claude Marechal. She has also studied anatomy for movement with Irene Dowd, and teaches Pilates and therapeutic movement in addition to Yoga.
