HYPNO-ANALGESIA
Hypno-analgesia is a form of pain control that uses the power of suggestion to relieve pain. This form of pain management has been around for centuries. It can be used during childbirth, dental surgeries and to help reduce chronic pain symptoms.
In 2015, I underwent surgery on my right arm, severing a major nerve. As a result of this surgery, I was left with chronic nerve pain from my shoulder blades down to the tips of my fingers. I can only describe it as a burning sensation, like a radiating fire that never goes away. I took high doses of two types of pain medication, and they barely took the edge off. I was depressed and had a hard time sleeping. The pain medication made me feel tired and drained of energy.
Why am I telling you this?
Because in 2019, I started learning how positive suggestions affect the body. I started using hypnosis regularly and telling myself that I could heal my body and feel better. I was able to taper off my pain and depression medication. Today, I am proud to say that my pain is manageable because of hypnosis.
Everyone is different in how they react to hypnosis. In fact, we all go in and out of the hypnotic state all day long. Imagine standing in the shower and beginning to relax. Your mind may start to wander, and then perhaps you start to problem solve a solution to something that has been weighing on your mind all day long. This happens because you relax the mind and open up to suggestions and problem-solving abilities.
Hypnosis is just a state of the mind where one experiences increased focus, attention, concentration, and suggestibility.
So how does it work with pain relief?
Hypno-analgesia has been professionally researched in controlled experiments (See list of research articles below). Studies have shown that hypno-analgesia can help relieve chronic pain associated with headaches, backaches, fibromyalgia, carcinoma-related pain, jaw pain, and mixed disorder pain. It has been proven to reduce pain during childbirth, dental procedures, and in the treatment of burns.
It works by opening your subconscious mind to the suggestion that you are in control of your pain and not the other way around. However, not all pain is bad. Acute pain is how we know our bodies need attention. Hypno-analgesia lets the body know you have heard the warning and have taken steps to fix the problem.
Hypnosis is not a treatment itself. It is a modality that can be used with other treatments to help relieve pain and reduce other related conditions associated with pain.
