Caring for our community like family takes every member of the Valley staff. We'd like to commend several members of the team for stepping up and providing exceptional care during several recent high-stakes situations.
Recently, a female patient passed a note to the barista at one of our espresso bars. The note said to tell her doctor to call 911, indicated she was being tracked, and that her spouse was hurting her. Our barista (who asked to remain anonymous) notified security about the note. Chris, one of our security supervisors, did not give up until he was able to find out who the patient was. We shared the information with Renton Police Department, WA, who later found the woman's home and arrested her husband for multiple assault charges. Chris and our barista very likely saved this woman's life.
In another recent event, Security Officers Manu and Butch found a non-verbal 5-year-old boy outside on the Valley campus. They took the boy to the Emergency Department to see if his parents were there. They learned that neither the boy nor any of his family members were Valley patients at the time, but he'd wandered to our campus from an apartment complex across the street. Manu and Butch contacted Renton Police, who said they were looking for a missing 5-year-old. RPD brought the boy's mother to our ED, where the family was reunited.
Security Officer Victor was recognized by ED staff for his exceptional courage and professionalism during a very dangerous encounter with a patient last week. The patient was out of control and under the influence of drugs, hiding in a bathroom where he was attempting to inject drugs with a needle. Victor was able to safely get the patient to the ground and get the needle away from him. Victor also was able to get a bag of unknown white powder out of the patient's mouth, likely preventing a serious overdose. Victor's actions kept other staff from being injured in a volatile situation and may have saved this patient's life.
"Security is often most visible during challenges, even though much of our success happens quietly in the background," said Eric Hamry, Director of Security. "Our officers prove once again they are able maintain the safety and security of patients, family and staff with empathy and compassion. We are extremely proud of our officers, their professionalism and dedication to the organization."
A huge thank you to these dedicated security team members (and our barista!) for their quick thinking and for making sure that our patients, staff, and community members are safe. Your incredible work makes a difference!
