Washington said, “Oh you can read it… but can you say it?” 🌧️🌲
You cross into the state feeling confident.
Mountains in the distance.
Evergreen trees everywhere.
A light drizzle that somehow feels permanent.
You’re like, “Yeah… I got this.”
Then you see the town names…
and suddenly you’re sounding them out like it’s your first day of school.
You’re out here saying:
“Poo-yall-up” ❌
“See-kwim” ❌
“Humpt-you-lips??” ❌
Meanwhile every Washington local just pauses…
takes a sip of coffee…
and quietly judges you through the rain. ☕🌧️
Because in Washington, pronunciation isn’t phonics…
it’s experience.
Puyallup? Pew-AL-up.
Sequim? Skwim (yeah… no letters make sense here).
Spokane? Spo-CAN — don’t get fancy with it.
And the moment you say one wrong?
Oh they know. Immediately.
Doesn’t matter if you’ve got hiking boots on.
Doesn’t matter if there’s a kayak strapped to your Subaru.
Doesn’t matter if you’re holding a locally roasted coffee…
Say “See-kwim” out loud…
and you just exposed yourself.
So now you’re cruising through misty roads,
mountain views in the background,
quietly practicing town names like it’s a survival skill.
Because in Washington…
the directions might be confusing…
the weather might change in 10 minutes…
…but the pronunciations?
Those will humble you instantly. 🚗🌧️
