There's a lot of talk in mom groups these days about "getting your pink back." And while it's meant to be encouraging - "Don't worry. You'll get your pink back," - it can feel like added pressure to return to our formal selves. Before pregnancy and birth and babies and b***s and sleepless nights and messy diapers and the most beautiful smiles wrecked our worlds.

So I just wanted to remind all the moms out there holding out hope that your "pink" will return, that there's really no reason to rush. Look at this beautiful flamingo. She's missing her pink but she is no less incredible, no less worthy of admiration, no less beautiful, no less flamboyant, no less a flamingo.

Your pink will come back, or maybe it won't. In the meantime, you are absolutely beautiful in this season of life. You are no less yourself. In fact I might argue you are more yourself than you've ever been. Because look at that baby - flamingos aren't born pink.

Maybe in the midst of all the changes and challenges and beauty and brokenness you're not losing yourself. Maybe you're finding yourself.

This is not an example of a great latch but I wanted to share it so I can point out where CC's tongue is.

Lots of moms worry about nursing a baby with teeth but in a proper latch, baby will put his or her tongue between the breast and the bottom gums/teeth. So you really don't feel teeth.

To get an idea of what I mean, try to bite your finger with your tongue covering your bottom teeth. Even with a lot of pressure, it's not painful, and a proper latch won't have a lot of pressure.

Now some babies will move that tongue and try to bite down to relieve teething pain, and I'm happy to teach my clients how to see that coming and what to do about it.

Whether you're brand new to the breastfeeding adventure, preparing for it, or experiencing some bumps far down the road, I'm here to help! Send me a DM and let's figure it out together.

Your arms.
Your milk.
Your heartbeat.
Your smell.

That's all your baby really needs. Sure diapers and clothes and somewhere to put the baby down safely while you shower are convenient, but the baby doesn't need that stuff to be perfectly happy and healthy. Your baby just needs you.

So while you're researching all the baby containers and stocking up on adorable clothes, take some time to invest in MOM too.

Build some strength.
Nourish your body.
Take care of your mental health.
Pamper yourself a little.

You deserve to be taken care of, too, and your baby benefits when you're at your best.

Did you know when you breastfeed that you and baby are essentially sharing an immune system? In fact I make it a point to expose myself to the same germs my baby is exposed to so my adult immune system can build antibodies which will be passed to my baby through my milk.

It's pretty cool. Almost like someone really intelligent designed it that way. 😉😉

If breastfeeding is natural, why do I need help to learn?

Walking is natural, too, but you didn't catch on immediately. You had a support system around you. They showed you how to walk. They held your hands when you were first getting started. They helped you up when you fell. They cheered you on when you took steps. And if you had extra obstacles they gave you tools to overcome them so you could learn to walk without even having to think about it.

That support system doesn't exist for most breastfeeding moms. Our families want to be able to give a bottle. Marketing companies sell us a thousand containers instead of encouraging us to hold our babies. Our workplaces aren't accommodating. Our partners don't know how to help. Our pediatricians suggest formula the moment a baby has any issue - gas, poor sleep, slow weight gain. Our media tells us to do the post partum "snap back."

Breastfeeding is natural, but the culture you're raising your baby in isn't. I'm passionate about being the voice that tells you that you're strong enough to do hard things. I want to stick with you until breastfeeding feels as natural to you as walking.

Expecting moms spend a lot of time researching labor management, designing nurseries, and stocking up on all the trendy baby items ... And then post partum hits like a ton of bricks.

Let me help you plan for a peaceful transition to motherhood. My Fourth Trimester package is about so much more than milk. It's about having someone a phone call away if you need a sounding board. It's regular visits from a trusted friend who knows how to support and encourage and hold space while you recover from birth and transition to motherhood. It's about taking time before your baby arrives to envision how their first few months on Earth will look and feel. It's about falling into a comfortable rhythm of sleeping and eating (and pooping) and playing so your Fourth Trimester feels peaceful and natural, not like chaotic survival mode.

Don't let society convince you the first three months have to be awful. It will be hard, but if you approach it with intentionality, you won't miss the beauty and awe of watching your baby discover the world for the first time.
