is leading the way in rural healthcare.

Catron County is one of the most rural communities in New Mexico, with 3,500 residents spread across 6,900 square miles. Distance has always been a challenge, but the Catron County Health Council is meeting that challenge head on with real solutions that are making a difference right now!

The Health Council has partnered with Cowboy Clinic to bring telehealth and online medical services directly to residents, making quality care accessible no matter how far from a city you live. They have launched a Medical Alert Program in partnership with county EMS that provides home-installed alert devices to residents of any age, giving families peace of mind and a direct lifeline to emergency services. Through a dedicated Narcan education and distribution program, more than 90 community members have been trained in overdose prevention, turning neighbors into lifesavers.

Catron County proves that small communities can find big solutions. Their Health Council is building a healthier, safer future for every resident, and their work is a model for rural communities across New Mexico and beyond.

Support your local health council by joining locally and share the impactful differences they are making within all communities across New Mexico.

Your Voice Matters: Join Region 7 Behavioral Health Community Listening Sessions
Socorro, NM — January 14, 2026 — Community members are invited to participate in upcoming Regional Behavioral Health Community Listening Sessions, designed to ensure that the voices and lived experiences of New Mexicans shape the future of behavioral and mental health care across the state.
These virtual sessions are part of a statewide initiative under Senate Bill 3 (SB3) – The Behavioral Health Reform and Investment Act, which calls for a more integrated, community-driven behavioral health system. Each region will identify its top priorities and develop a four-year plan to strengthen behavioral health services in partnership with local organizations, healthcare agencies, and all three branches of government.
The sessions will explore the intersection of behavioral health with housing, justice, education, and social wellbeing, creating a space for dialogue that drives actionable and systemic improvements to New Mexico’s behavioral health system.
“Every community voice adds power to the state’s vision for an equitable, accessible and effective behavioral health care system,” said Valeria Alarcón, Executive Director of the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils. “This is your opportunity to shape meaningful, community-informed, and long-lasting change.”

Cold weather can cause Narcan to freeze at 5°F or below. When frozen, the spray will not work. After Narcan fully thaws at room temperature (about 15 minutes), it can be used and is effective.

If an overdose is suspected while Narcan is frozen, do not wait — call 911 right away. If the person is not breathing or is breathing slowly, provide rescue breathing until Narcan can be given and help arrives.
