❄️ Let it snow! ❄️

The DMV area was hit with another coating of winter weather, and after the last storm, some of us learned our backs were not up for the task of shoveling.

As with any activity, if you haven't prepared your body to perform the task you are at a greater chance for injury.

Physical Therapist Kevin Dandy has his 4 tips to help prevent additional backaches:

❄️ If the snow is heavy, clear the snow more frequently to help reduce the load
❄️ Take rest breaks as needed
❄️ Avoid repetitive bending, lifting and twisting if you are not prepared for it
❄️ Use the shovel to push the snow like a plow

💪 with PT John and his patient Marius out-flexing us all!

Marius just finished his first phase of rehab and is scheduled to have his collar bone plate removed AHEAD of schedule.

HOW WE DID THIS: Through manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and blood flow restriction training (BFR) John maximized his range of motion!

Who else is flexing on the second Monday of 2022?

When was the last time you saw a Physical Therapist in the operating room?!

To effectively rehab our spine surgery patients, we have to fully understand the surgery.

PT Kelly Nottingham traded in her VTFC polo for some scrubs to shadow Dr. Schuler and his PA Thao Allen performing a cervical disc replacement surgery. Talk about taking our game up a notch!

Moments like these give us appreciation for the intricacy of these surgeries, and highlights the strong bond between the surgeons at VSI and our physical therapists in providing comprehensive care for our patients.

This is what it looks like to get cleared to safely get back to weight lifting after neck surgery rehab!

Congrats to our patient Blake who is proof that our comprehensive model works. With a combination of modalities including spinal fusion, dry needling, spine-specialized rehab/physical therapy with Melissa, and functional exercise, he is back in action and out of neck pain.

Look at Kelly and Melissa stepping up their myofascial release game 💁‍♀️

Kelly and Melissa recently traveled to complete Level 1 of a Myofascial Release Course with John F. Barnes, PT, who has been treating patients since 1960. So what exactly is myofascial release all about? Let’s break it down:

➡️ Helps treat muscular and fascial restrictions throughout the body
➡️ Can be used on any patient who is having pain caused from trauma, inflammatory responses or surgical procedures
➡️ It's a more gentle form of soft tissue massage and has no adverse effects, which allows us to use it at any point during someone's rehab.

Sounds too good to be true, but it’s not - give a try for yourself! 703.709.1116

Since most of us don’t have cranes around to pick up our heavy objects, our Athletic Trainer Jason Arnett uses a simple analogy to help us remember proper lifting form to prevent injury and pain.

Lift like a CRANE!

It’s remarkable how these two objects (your back and spine when deadlifting, and the crane behind Josie) look and function the same.

Let’s break this comparison down:

➡️ The crane is used to pick up heavy things off the ground.

➡️ The deadlift is used to pick up heavy things off the ground.

Soccer players! Have you felt your knee “shift” when cutting across the field, followed by painful swelling and a loss in range of motion?

Here you’ll see that this balance exercise ⬆️ helps to improve single leg stability and proprioception (your body's sense of self-movement and joint position), training the entire lower extremity chain and core, which is imperative for athletes.
