ICYMI: Proposed Medicare Fee Schedule Introduces New Codes for Hearing Device Services

After more than three decades, the longstanding CPT® codes for hearing aid services—CPT codes 92590–92595—are being replaced. This update deletes the six outdated codes, in use since 1993, and introduces 12 new codes designed primarily for use with air conduction hearing devices in the treatment of hearing loss. Beginning January 1, 2026, audiologists will use the new set of CPT codes to describe professional services provided for hearing aid and hearing device-related services, as outlined in the proposed rule for the 2026 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.

This major update results from a multiyear collaborative effort between the American Academy of Audiology and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to modernize the coding framework.

Unlocking Better Hearing with Low-Gain Amplification:

It is common for adults to present to audiology clinics with hearing- and/or listening-related complaints, yet have clinically normal pure-tone hearing (air-conduction thresholds ≤25 dB HL). These individuals report struggling to hear and communicate in complex acoustic environments (that is background noise and reverberation).

New Survey for Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss:

Picou and colleagues (2025) recruited children aged 9 to 17 years with unilateral hearing loss to complete an online survey about classroom listening difficulties with no personal hearing device (n = 1148) and with personal hearing devices, including hearing aids, bone conduction aids, contralateral routing of signal devices, and cochlear implants (n = 897). The purpose of the study was to validate a previous survey designed to assess listening difficulties in classrooms by children with UHL who may or may not use technology.

Our Story

The American Academy of Audiology was founded in January of 1988 when a group of audiology leaders met at the invitation of Dr. James Jerger at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. The purpose of the study group was to establish an independent, freestanding national organization run by and for audiologists. The new organization would be uniquely sensitive to the professional issues and the professional concerns affecting all audiologists. A Charter Advisory Committee was formed to elect officers, adopt bylaws, establish membership requirements and set up a national office. Jerger was elected the first President. The Charter of Incorporation for the Academy was filed in Nashville, Tennessee, in June 1988. The first national convention of the Academy was held in Kiawah Island, South Carolina in April 1989 with some 600 attendees. As an indication of the phenomenal growth of the Academy, the 13th Annual Convention was held in San Diego during April 2001 with more than 7,300 attendees. The Academy asks our followers to not post any negative, offensive, denigrating, and/or completely out of context content, pictures, or videos. All posts by followers can be removed based upon the discretion of Academy Board of Directors and staff. When tagging any Academy-related social media platform, avoid using statements, photos, video, or audio that could be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening, intimidating, or that might constitute harassment or bullying.
