We asked Alex Costa’s mom, Lisa, a few questions for our Parents of Power of Recovery segment.
She's a Family Recovery Life Coach, has walked this road first hand shares her POWERFUL message.
✨ Q: What makes you most proud of Alex and his part in Recovery and the Power of Recovery team?
“Alex has 14 years of recovery from opioids and other substances. As a teenager, he was extremely challenging. But underneath the risky behavior was a smart, funny, compassionate person. I always believed that was the real Alex.
There were arrests. There were relapses. There was he**in. There were truly life-threatening moments. Any parent who has lived this knows the nightmare.
But he found sustainable recovery. And the amazing human being I always believed in came back stronger than ever.
Today, he’s not only thriving personally and professionally, he’s an asset to treatment centers, individuals in recovery, and families. Watching him use his experience to help others is the greatest gift.”
✨ Q: What advice would you share with other parents supporting their children through recovery or life challenges?
“Get support and education as quickly as possible.
As parents, we often don’t understand our role. Out of fear and love, we can unintentionally contribute to the cycle instead of helping break it. Addiction is a brain disease. Our loved ones are struggling in ways we can’t fully see.
Just as they cannot overcome this without support, neither can we.
Learn. Get guidance. Surround yourself with people who understand recovery. You can still have a relationship with your child during their hardest moments and you can become an effective champion of their recovery.” -Lisa Fell Costa
💙Recovery is possible for individuals and for families willing to learn, grow, and stay in the work.
