Overheard in Pediatric Occupational Therapy: "Wait...laundry has settings?"

In Occupational Therapy, we work on Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). These are the foundational skills that help kiddos function more independently at home, at school, and in the community. What those ADLs look like depends entirely on the child’s age, needs, and developmental level.

🧼 For a preschooler, an ADL might be learning to wash hands, brush teeth, or put on shoes.

🍎 For an elementary-aged child, it might look like packing a lunch, managing a daily routine, or tying shoelaces.

💡 For a teen, ADLs expand to include higher-level tasks like sorting laundry, cooking simple meals, organizing a backpack, or managing time and responsibilities.

Many of our patients need extra support to build these everyday skills due to motor coordination challenges, sensory differences, executive functioning delays, or cognitive disabilities. OT gives them that support, and then steps back as they start to take ownership of their own lives.

Could your child benefit from Occupational Therapy? If you're unsure you're welcome to call and schedule a free screening with one of our therapists!

Overheard in Pediatric Physical Therapy: The Three C’s of Baby Movement

Ever wonder what the difference is between creeping, crawling, and cruising? Here’s the scoop, because understanding these milestones is key in supporting your baby’s development and catching concerns early.

↘Crawling: While crawling, babies keep their bellies on the floor and pull themselves forward with their arms, using their legs to help push along. It’s sometimes called the “commando crawl” or “army crawl.”

↖Creeping: Creeping means hands and knees on the floor, arms straight, belly lifted, moving forward with opposite arm and leg. Creeping is a big milestone! Creeping helps develop strength, balance, coordination, and prepares little bodies for standing and walking. **Fun fact: Creeping on hands and knees helps both sides of the brain communicate, builds cross-body coordination, and integrates primitive reflexes. When a baby gets older, this "bilateral coordination" is important for things like tracking words across a page, focusing, and handwriting. Studies even suggest that babies who skip creeping can sometimes have more trouble with reading, writing, and attention later on.

➡Cruising: Cruising is when babies pull to stand and move sideways while holding onto furniture for support. Cruising challenges their balance and builds the confidence needed to take those first adorable steps on their own.

It is important to see each of these stages in your child’s development. Each one helps build essential strength and coordination.

Watch for these signs:

Overheard in Occupational Therapy: Age-Appropriate Attention Spans

Now that it's summer are you noticing that if a screen isn't involved, your child can’t seem to sustain their focus on anything? You’re not alone! But here’s the thing: attention isn’t just about “trying harder,” it’s a complex skill set that occupational therapists are trained for years to address, using science-backed strategies that go way beyond telling your kid over and over again to “focus”.

In occupational therapy, we talk about sustained attention as the ability to maintain focus on a task over an age-appropriate period of time. This is a key piece of what OTs call executive functioning. If your child struggles to stick with a task, complete multi-step activities, or shift their focus appropriately from one task to another, they may need occupational therapy in order to catch up (and stay caught up) with their peers.

What OTs Look For:
🔵Task Initiation: Can your child start an activity without heavy prompting?
🟡Task Completion: Do they finish what they start, or abandon it after just a few seconds?
🟢Impulse Control: Are they easily distracted by every noise, screen, or sibling walking by?
🔴Working Memory: Can they remember and follow directions, or do they immediately forget step one?

How Occupational Therapy Can Help: OTs use evidence-based interventions to support attention and executive function:

Overheard in Therapy: Don't forget about your teenagers! It’s easy to assume Pediatric Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, or Physical Therapy is just for little kids. But here’s the truth: teenagers often need pediatric therapy just as much *and sometimes more* than younger kiddos.

Here are a few real-life examples:
🧠Occupational Therapy:
Maybe your teen has trouble organizing their time, staying focused, or managing stress and daily routines. OT can help with executive functioning skills, self-care, driving readiness, even cooking or budgeting, basically everything they’ll need to live independently!

👄Speech Therapy:
If your teen has trouble expressing themselves, keeps getting misunderstood, or avoids social situations because of anxiety around speaking, speech therapy isn’t just for speech sounds. We help teens with social skills, stuttering, language processing, and communication for school, jobs, and real-life situations.

💪Physical Therapy:
Teens are notorious for sports injuries, growth spurts that throw off their coordination, or chronic pain from sitting at a desk all day. PT can help them recover from injuries, improve balance, strength, and mobility, and get back to the activities they love, without pain holding them back.

At Rehab Specialists of Idaho, we always say early intervention is best, but here’s something that matters more: getting the right support at ANY age. If your teen missed out on therapy when they were younger, it’s not too late.

Don’t let the myth of “they’ll outgrow it” or “it’s too late” hold your teen back. If you’ve noticed a struggle, big or small, let’s talk. ✨The only bad time to start is never.✨

So channel your inner teen and text us (or call if you'd prefer 😉) and schedule a free screening to chat with a therapist about your concerns.

“During speech therapy, play isn’t just a break from learning; for young children, play is learning. Play therapy is one of the most effective ways to help children generalize the new skills they are learning because it keeps them engaged and allows them to practice in ways that connect to their everyday experiences." -Aubrey Henrie MS, CCC-SLP

Can your 2 year old do these 13 things?

As therapists we are always watching to see if your child is meeting their childhood developmental milestones--it's one of the many ways we can know if physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy might be needed.

With help from the cdc.gov website, here are some of the major developmental milestones for a 2 year old. These are things most children (75%) can do by the age of 2. Remember, every child develops at a different pace and in their own way, but if you have concerns after reviewing this list--give us a call and we can fully evaluate your child. Early interventions can save years of unnecessary struggles!
