Do any of the following statements sound correct about your child?

👂My child often mishears sounds and words.
👂“Huh?” or “What?” are common responses when starting conversations with my child.
👂My child struggles with spelling and/or phonics.
👂Noisy environments are overwhelming when my child is trying to listen.
👂My child has trouble following verbal directions.
👂My child struggles with verbal (word) math problems.

If these statements ring true about your child, it might be time to look into testing regarding an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)!

Auditory processing difficulties are thought to affect up to 20% of school aged children and are very often misdiagnosed due to other diagnoses such as other speech-language delays, various learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and depression.

Sandra Reddish, a Speech-Language Pathologist with Rehab Specialists of Idaho (RSI) explains that an APD can affect everything from how a child hears, to how they read, to even how they remember things. Cont....

🎄TOMORROW! 🎅🏻THURSDAY NIGHT!🎁
You're invited to meet "sensory-friendly" Santa!

Dec 4th | Thursday | 5:30-7pm | RSI Rexburg Pediatric Clinic

We will have a free professional photographer taking pictures (emailed to you when complete), and small refreshments, crafts, and activities available.

For all RSI clients and employees, and their friends and families! ☃

Our most common question every year....Who is "sensory-friendly" Santa? 🎅🏻
We feel that some of our friends can get scared and overwhelmed easily during a traditional loud and rushed Santa experience. At an RSI "sensory-friendly" Santa night, both Santa and our photographer know to be calm and relaxed. Kids and their families get to meet Santa in a private, quiet room. There is no pressure to sit on Santa's lap (though he's happy with anything!), a bench is provided nearby, and Santa is prepared to love and interact with kids with all different abilities!

Can your 3 year old do these 12 things?

As therapists we are always watching to see if your child is meeting their childhood developmental milestones--it's one of the many ways we can know if physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy might be needed.

With help from the cdc.gov website, here are some of the major developmental milestones for a 3 year old. These are things most children (75%) can do by the age of 3. Remember, every child develops at a different pace and in their own way, but if you have concerns after reviewing this list--give us a call and we can fully evaluate your child. Early interventions can save years of unnecessary struggles!

💙October is full of reasons to celebrate!💛

From superheroes and costumes to something even more special...October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

At Rehab Specialists of Idaho, we’re proud to celebrate every child’s strengths, abilities, and individuality. This little superhero reminds us that with the right support, kids with Down syndrome can climb higher, swing farther, and reach every goal they set.

This month, we’re also helping spread awareness with the following guidance from the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS):

💙People with Down syndrome should always be referred to as people first.
💛Instead of “a Down syndrome child,” it should be “a child with Down syndrome.”
💙Also avoid “Down’s child” and describing the condition as “Down’s,” as in, “He has Down’s.”
💛Down syndrome is a condition or a syndrome, not a disease.
💙People “have” Down syndrome, they do not “suffer from” it and are not “afflicted by” it.
💛“Typically developing” or “typical” is preferred over “normal.”
💙The NDSS uses the preferred spelling, Down syndrome, rather than Down’s syndrome.
