How Emerson Was Formed

"I decided to form Emerson Speech & Consulting as a result of my journey with my son, Jackson. From the time of his birth in 2015 we started discovering difficulties, first in the area of feeding and then in the area of communication. As a speech and feeding therapist I didn't seek outside help until he was about 2 1/2 years old. I treated his feeding and communication deficits at home until he reached the age where he started frequently refusing. It was then that I encountered the obstacles of the costs of therapy, insurance, different therapists and approaches. We decided to re-work our budget and pay for services. During this experience, my son did not enjoy speech therapy. He cried when we arrived, during, and until we were in the car most sessions. As a therapist I could appreciate the methods, procedures, and goals being targeted but it was more about the number of repetitions and stimulus items and not my child. They did not truly see him. My number one goal as a parent is for my child to be safe and HAPPY. After an autism evaluation and an occupational therapy evaluation we discovered there was more to the story. For a child with sensory processing deficits, a typical "sit in your chair session" for 30 minutes is not ideal. He needs extra supports to maintain regulation and engage. Emerson was formed to be a resource for families that creates individualized therapy plans for each family and offers flexible sessions/schedules to accommodate families in every type of financial situation. Emerson strives to be CHILD first, flexible, fun, and ultimately a partner to walk alongside on your child's journey to accomplishing their goals."
