Kaylie Angello was diagnosed with Stage-4, non-Hodgkins lymphoma when she was 22. The side effects of cancer and its treatment were tough. She had to put her education and career on hold. Now, six years into remission, she's seen first-hand how cancer rehabilitation can truly make an impact. As a ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation therapist, Kaylie wants to help others who have been through the same.

"We have a life to live," she shared. "We have things to do, and we need to be able to build that strength back up to tolerate higher levels of activity."

Join Kaylie for our next, "Living Well Beyond Cancer" seminar April 22 to learn about rehabilitation and resilience for adolescent and young-adult cancer survivors. We're offering the live Q&A session at two convenient times: 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. EST.

Have you ever heard of proprioception? It's the ability to sense where your body is without looking. It helps to:
- Coordinate movements
- Adjust force
- Prevent injuries
- Improve balance, motor planning and body awareness

Poor proprioception can make it appear a person is clumsy, uses too much or too little force when picking things up or writing or has difficulty with daily tasks, like dressing. Many things, including injuries and neurologic or sensory processing disorders, can cause it.

Occupational therapists such as Kelly McCue use various exercises and activities to help improve proprioception and restore function. Take a look at this exercise Kelly created for one of her patients!

Jamie Cenolli is not like a regular mom; she's a "cool mom." Or at least that's what she was going for when she took her four- and seven-year-old daughters roller skating. It was a perfect day. Then, despite Jamie's impressive skills on her blades, she did what any mom would do when one of her daughters screamed for her- she made a quick pivot. Unfortunately, she lost her balance, fell and broke her wrist.

After surgery, Jamie's mom, who had previously come to us, suggested she see Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist Zachary Saunders. "As always, mom knows best," Jamie admitted. "The moment I walked into the office, I felt a sense of comfort. The office quickly became my second family."

At first, everything felt impossible, but she was making small gains. After a few months, Jamie wasn't improving as much as she should have. She returned to her surgeon to find out she still had a loose bone, preventing her from fully turning her wrist. After a second surgery, she returned to Zachary, knowing she was in good hands.

Zachary helped Jamie work on her range of motion and strength. Then, along with Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist Pamela Scanlon, he also created a custom brace.

"I couldn't be more grateful for their expertise," Jamie said. "The brace they designed helped me turn my palm up, providing a gentle but firm stretch. It's exactly what I needed, and the attention to detail they put into tailoring the solution to my needs made all the difference."

Jamie made incredible progress. She regained full use of her hand and is now back to being a cool mom to her daughters. She has a lot of appreciation for the team who helped get her there. "I'm forever grateful for the compassion and support Zac showed me throughout this journey," Jamie said. "I couldn't have made it through without him, and I'll always appreciate his unwavering commitment to helping me heal."

More than 84 thousand adolescents and young adults were diagnosed with cancer last year alone. Cancer and its treatment can lead to both short and long-term challenges, even after remission.

It's an experience ReVital Cancer Therapist Kevin Campanale remembers well. He was 14 years old when he was diagnosed with Leukemia. "My world just seemed to come to a halt," he said. "Looking back I realize how much physical therapy and exercise helped shape my recovery."

Watch the video to learn more about what Kevin went through on his cancer survival journey. Then mark your calendars for April 22 for our next Living Well Beyond Cancer Survivor Series, Thriving After Cancer: Rehabilitation and Resilience for Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors.

We're offering two live Q&A sessions to discuss the side effects that can persist or worsen post-treatment and how rehabilitation services can positively impact survivorship.

"Being an athletic trainer is more than just taping ankles and handing out ice bags." - Taylor Lipinsky, athletic trainer and licensed professional counselor.

Athletic trainers are an important part of an athlete's team. Beyond injury prevention and care, they're often invaluable mentors and guides. They listen to athletes talk about how hard life can be, how scared they are to return to sport and about the pressures to perform. This is often an under-discussed part of the job, but its importance can't be understated.

Chad Chalmers was diagnosed with Stage 3 chronic kidney disease in 2023. The kidney disease caused severe edema and led to an emergency room visit because of fluid in the lungs.

Once in the hospital, Chad started dialysis. During his two-week stay, about 20 liters of fluid had to be removed from his body. While on bed rest, the staff worried about Chad's muscle atrophy and consequent mobility issues.

He started physical therapy in the hospital, then home health and then finally to Physical Therapists Jerin Abraham and Drew Wibisono.

Working with Jerin and Drew, Chad pushed boundaries, targeted his weaknesses and improved his strengths. "I didn't feel forced or overwhelmed, which gave me more confidence over time," he said.

Chad has been able to reach his goals and see the progression from when he started. Thank you for trusting us with your care, Chad!
