Texas Acupuncture Awareness Day 2025: A Historic Moment for Our Profession

AUSTIN, TX – October 30, 2025 – The Texas State Capitol became a hub of holistic health as the Texas Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (TAAOM) hosted its inaugural Texas Acupuncture Awareness Day. The event united acupuncturists, students, and legislators to champion the role of Traditional East Asian Medicine in Texas healthcare.

A Day of Connection, Advocacy, and Action

Over 30 professionals and students traveled from Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and beyond to take part in the event. Inside the Capitol’s Legislative Conference Center, practitioners offered complimentary holistic services — including tongue and pulse diagnosis, acupressure, and mini-acupuncture treatments — to nearly 50 state employees and visitors.

The Capitol rotunda came alive with public Tai Chi and Qigong demonstrations, where applause echoed through the halls as attendees experienced firsthand the calm strength and mindfulness at the heart of our medicine.

Voices of Our Profession

Keynote speaker Senator Molly Cook, also an active emergency room nurse, spoke about the growing convergence of Eastern and Western medicine, offering a vital healthcare perspective that resonated deeply with attendees. The event also received supportive messages from Representative Gene Wu and other leaders across the integrative medicine community, including IMA and TCMAAA.

“This event powerfully raised awareness among both policymakers and the
public,” said Dr. Adylle Varon, Board Member and Secretary of TAAOM. “We
not only demonstrated the value of our medicine but also strengthened our
professional community across the state.”

From the Chair of Advocacy

“As Chair of the Advocacy Committee of the Texas Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (TAAOM), my mission is to build a stronger bridge between licensed acupuncturists and Texas lawmakers. Our committee is dedicated to advancing legislation, insurance inclusion, and public recognition that reflect acupuncture’s vital role in modern healthcare. I call on all practitioners to unite, speak with one voice, and work together to strengthen and protect our profession for the future. ”
— Dr. Sylvia He, Chair of Advocacy, TAAOM

A Collective Step Forward

The success of this inaugural event marks a significant milestone for acupuncture and Oriental medicine in Texas, setting the stage for ongoing advocacy and integration within the state’s healthcare system.

TAAOM extends its heartfelt gratitude to all members, volunteers, students, and supporters who made the day possible. Your dedication, professionalism, and passion continue to elevate our medicine and inspire progress.

How often do you find yourself wishing you could do more? More to show our community the true power of acupuncture? More to shift the perception of our medicine from "alternative" to "essential"? More to inspire the next generation of healers?
That desire to give back — to our profession and to the people we serve—is at the heart of why many of us chose this path. And now, we have a monumental opportunity to turn that desire into a powerful, visible reality.
Please save the date for a landmark event:
Thursday, October 30, 2025 11a-3p
LCC - Legislative Conference Center - Austin Capitol Grounds
Imagine this: The iconic Texas Capitol, a symbol of policy and power, transformed for a day into a vibrant hub of community healing and wellness. Picture dozens of DX / TX stations in the room, with many Texans learning about the effects of acupuncture and TCM, perhaps for the first time.
This is our chance to:
Be the Face of Acupuncture in Texas: We won't just be talking about what we do; we'll be showing them. There is no more powerful testimony than a person feeling the calm and relief of a treatment in a beautiful, communal setting.
Demystify and Educate: We can answer questions, dispel myths, and demonstrate the scope of conditions we treat. Let's show everyone from state employees to students and visitors that acupuncture is a safe, effective, and accessible pillar of healthcare.
Strengthen Our Professional Community in TX: This is a chance to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our peers. To network, share stories, and feel the collective strength of our community. The energy we create will ripple out, benefiting all our practices.
Plant a Seed for the Future: A young person touring the Capitol that day might see us and discover their life's calling. A lawmaker walking by might gain a new perspective that influences future healthcare policy.
Austin-area LAc's, we need you most of all!
As the practitioners in the state's political and cultural heart, you are the frontline ambassadors of our medicine. Your presence is crucial to making this event a resounding success. This is our home turf. Let's show Texas what we're made of.
How you can help right now:
SAVE THE DATE: October 30, 2025. Block it off in your calendar.
VOLUNTEER YOUR EXPERTISE: We will need practitioners to administer treatments, talk to the public, and help with logistics. Your time and skill are the heart of this event.
SPREAD THE WORD: Forward this https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfqNQBvIsEHsWkwmglU3eJAnnOkdd1Lf7OcSmUHYL0m8HWrzw/viewform to every LAc and student you know in Central Texas. Share it in your professional groups and social media circles.
This is more than an event; it's a movement. It’s our collective moment to step out of our treatment rooms and into the spotlight, to give the gift of awareness to our community and secure the future of our profession.
Let's come together to make the Texas Capitol a beacon of healing. To express your interest and get more details as they become available, please consider signing up here for a shift or two. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfqNQBvIsEHsWkwmglU3eJAnnOkdd1Lf7OcSmUHYL0m8HWrzw/viewform

Our Story

TAAOM is the voice of the Licensed Acupuncturist in Texas. We are a community of colleagues, mentors, and friends dedicated to promoting and protecting the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

The Texas Acupuncture Association (TAA) was founded in 1989 before the practice of acupuncture was legal in the State of Texas. It was through the efforts of the association that acupuncture became legal and professionally licensed in Texas in 1993. In 2000, TAA reorganized as the Texas Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (TAAOM) in order to better represent all facets of the profession. Today it is the largest professional organization of licensed acupuncturists and practitioners of Oriental medicine in Texas.

The mission of TAAOM is to protect and promote the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Texas by:

  • Understanding and addressing the concerns of Licensed Acupuncturists and the communities they serve
