âThe Mother Baby Program at The Redleaf Center for Family Healing saved my life after I gave birth to my daughter. On top of the emotional and physical toll of my pregnancy, I didnât feel a connection with my baby. I had an emergency C-section due to health issues, and my daughter was taken to the NICU immediately. The trauma I experienced left me feeling depressed, guilty, and alone, with little desire to continue living. I had everything I had ever wished for, yet I had never felt so empty. At a well-child visit a few months later, I was referred to the Redleaf Center. I didnât realize how much I was struggling until I was there. The staff and other parents made me feel so validated. Thereâs stigma around motherhood â that you should always be happy. When you donât have those joyous feelings constantly, it can feel isolating, but the program helped me realize that weâre not alone.
My daughter is one year old now, and the connection we share is indescribable. Iâm enjoying the moments I never thought I would. I feel more invested as a nurse after the experiences I had with both of my children. My son was in the PICU several times, so I understand why loved ones feel scared, sad, and frustrated. Itâs fulfilling to put families at ease and make patients feel heard, validated, and cared for â just like I was.â
