How much does it cost?

"Understanding the cost of your plan is a lot," says Susan Brill, a key member of our Patient Accounting Management team. "While the monthly premium is important for financial planning, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. If the insurance plan you’re paying for doesn’t support your medical needs, is it really the right plan? Here are a few other things I want people to consider when choosing their coverage," she says.

What is your deductible? This is the amount of money you must pay out of pocket for covered health care before your insurance starts to pay out. Let's say your plan has a $1,000 deductible. You go to the doctor, and your bill is $600. You pay the full $600 because you haven't met your deductible yet.

What is your out-of-pocket maximum? That's the most you'll have to pay for covered health care in your plan year before insurance covers 100% of the costs. What are the copayments (copays)? These are set fees for each service, like $30 per doctor's visit, $10 for generic prescriptions, etc.

Is there a coinsurance? Let's say your plan has a 20% coinsurance and $1000 deductible. You've already paid your deductible. Now, you get a service that costs $1000. You pay 20% of $1000, or $200 and your insurance pays for the rest.

We hosted 27 students from Richland Center, Riverdale and River Valley High Schools for our 3rd annual Career Day on Thursday, October 30. "This event gives students a first-hand look at careers available right in their own back yards," says Sara Stibbe, program coordinator. Students had the chance to work alongside and hear from members of OR/Outpatient, Obstetrics, Nursing, Lab, X-ray, Pharmacy, Social Work, Information Systems, Medical Assistants, Respiratory, and the Richland Hospital Foundation. The students loved trying their hands at CPR, but seeing the LUCAS device in action was a highlight. They even learned about volunteer and job shadowing opportunities as well.

This annual event is a great chance for all of us to see our work through the eyes of the potential next generation of medical professionals. It was great to see so many inspired students!

November is set aside to bring awareness to the silent killer known as pancreatic cancer. It is so labeled because this deadly form of cancer is hard to detect in the early stages. No symptoms, no warning, just a diagnosis that changes everything. This is why the work of Greater Richland Area Cancer Elimination, or G.R.A.C.E, is so important to help fund, both for helping those facing the diagnosis, and in funding research. We appreciate all of you who support their work, including our own staff.

Kelly works with inpatients and outpatients as she works towards obtaining her Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) certification. There are 10,000 CDCES in the US and with Kelly’s work, we’ll have THREE of them!

“Kelly comes to us with years of experience in Nutrition and Health coaching, including assisting people with diabetes. It ignited her curiosity in becoming a specialist, helping those with conditions that benefit from diet and lifestyle modifications, such as obesity, prediabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and more,” says Ty Mulholland, director of Nutrition and Diabetes Education, and herself a CDCES. “She makes it possible for us to help more people in our community."

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to be mentored by this team. They have a unique focus, expertise, and passion for helping people with diabetes in our community. I am looking forward to supporting and empowering people with diabetes, or prediabetes, to feel capable and confident that they can improve their health and quality of life,” says Kelly.

Kelly is also looking forward to community outreach opportunities to provide nutrition and wellness education, along with sharing her expertise in healthy community promotion. For more information or to schedule an appointment, talk to your primary care provider or call 608.647.6321.
