Wherever 9-year-old Adeline goes, her AED is probably with her.

She was born with a long QT syndrome, a condition that could cause her heart to malfunction at any moment. The automated external defibrillator could save her life.

Adeline's parents, Alessandra and Aaron Dinin, learned about the heart problem on the day Adeline was born. A week later, she had surgery. Adeline has lived a mostly ordinary life, except for the AED, and her mission to raise awareness on social media.

Adeline enjoys creating content for her more than 4,000 followers at http://spr.ly/61894MY71. In one video post, she dances near an AED with the caption, "Wait, do you know where an AED is?"

"I love making the dance videos," Adeline said.

"It's to increase awareness about long QT syndrome, to get people thinking about AEDs and notice them, and to encourage people to get CPR trained," Alessandra said. "We've been contacted by people from all over the world and we try to help as best as we can."

Adeline doesn't know if her social media posts have directly led to any lives being saved. But she does know that her heart condition made a difference in one life – her dad's.

"Aaron had this condition all along, and he hadn't been treated," Alessandra said. "Adeline was essentially her dad's guardian angel."

Aaron and Adeline's devices and medicines give the family peace of mind. Every day, the Dinins are grateful for Adeline's team.

"If she hadn't been diagnosed right away, we could have found her one day in her crib not breathing," Alessandra said. "We were so fortunate she got diagnosed on day one of her life so we have the infrastructure in place to keep her safe."

On stage with her dance studio team, Noelle felt a little off. Her balance was wonky. She felt disassociated with her body. She focused on getting the next move right.

The choreography called for the dancers to drop to the stage and lie down. When the other dancers got up, Noelle didn't. The audience assumed it was part of the dance, until a dancer cried out: "Stop the music!"
Noelle’s heart had stopped. She was in cardiac arrest at age 17.

One audience member started performing CPR while another ran to get the automated external defibrillator. It took two shocks from the AED to get her heart beating.

At the hospital, tests revealed Noelle has long QT syndrome, a rare disorder of the heart's electrical system that can cause an irregular heartbeat, along with life-threatening complications like sudden cardiac arrest. She’d had it since birth.

Noelle got an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, or ICD, to monitor her heart and correct irregular rhythms. She also started taking medication to help control her heartbeat. Her doctor worked with her to find a safe game plan to keep dancing.

"I knew I wanted dance to be in my life forever and I didn't want this to get in the way," she said.

Noelle worked her way back slowly, and was able to join her team for the last performance of her senior year.

Now she’s a full-time performer and teacher, currently in Japan, introducing kids to dance and hoping she inspires and empowers them to develop their own relationship with dance.

"Dance helped me keep going through the hardest time in my life," Noelle said. "It's a dream to be able to share it with others."

A severe asthma attack during a cross-country race sent seventh-grader Memphis into cardiac arrest. Bystander CPR and an AED saved him.

Because everyone acted quickly when Memphis collapsed, doctors felt confident he wouldn't have any physical or mental deficits. Two weeks after his cardiac arrest, doctors cleared Memphis to resume all activities. A week later, he joined his teammates for the final race of the season – back at the same city park where his heart stopped.

Memphis' parents, Erin and Justin, have been spreading the word about learning CPR, and many of their friends and family have now been trained.

"This is what my life's work is going to be now," Erin said. "It's not just about learning CPR, but also about responding immediately. Don't wait for someone else to do it. It might be too late."

Amor propio means looking out for your health. That includes talking to your doctor about venous thromboembolism -- a blood clot that starts deep in a vein – especially if you’ve had cancer, surgery or a family history of VTE.

Having the key to someone's heart means knowing CPR.

Show your loved ones how much they mean to you by learning CPR and how to use an AED. These two things give a person the best chance of survival if they go into cardiac arrest.

Signs that a person could be in cardiac arrest:
- They suddenly collapse.
- They are not responsive.
- They are not breathing or only gasping.
