September is Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Awareness Month.

Meet some of our NICU caregivers who provide care to our tiniest patients. At Kadlec, we celebrate the birth of every baby, recognizing that each arrival is a unique and special experience for families. Sometimes, tiny new members of our community require a little extra help to begin their journeys. We're proud to provide that critical support through the area's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our NICU is equipped to treat high-risk babies needing specialized attention, including premature infants, as well as full-term babies who need additional care.

Did you know that almost any infection can lead to sepsis?

Sepsis is the body's extreme response to an infection. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body.

Get ahead of sepsis by following these key steps:
1. Practice good hygiene: wash your hands regularly and keep wounds clean
2. Know the signs: look out for symptoms like high fever, rapid breathing and confusion
3. Act fast: if you suspect sepsis, seek immediate medical care.

The Kadlec Foundation is collecting books to ensure every baby in our NICU gets this nurturing experience. 📚

Evelynn weighed 1 pound at birth and spent 99 days in our Level III NICU. Donor funding has long supported this department, investing in carestations, preemie positioners, jaundice meters, jaundice-reducing lights, breast milk fridges and milk warmers – caring for our most high-risk infants. On average, 500 infants are admitted to the NICU from about 2,500 born at Kadlec in a typical year.

Kadlec offers a Prepared Childbirth class for first-time parents and those who have not previously attended birth preparation courses. Attendees will learn about labor and birth, including pain management techniques and postpartum information.
