Here’s one fact about Ernst Abbe you may not know: As a 19th-century economic liberal, he was opposed to patenting. For this reason, none of his inventions in the field of microscope construction were patented before 1890. 🔬

Like many others, Abbe was convinced by one argument in favor of patenting: The alternative to patenting is secrecy. But secrecy is even more detrimental to progress than the temporary monopoly of a patent. That is why Abbe himself took out patents from 1890 onward, on the condition that these were not allowed to restrict scientific research.

Happy birthday, Ernst Abbe! Thank you for enabling outstanding achievements that have played a decisive role in our company becoming a technological leader. 💙
