Exercising to preserve muscle mass is important for many reasons--more than aesthetics.

*Muscle burns 10-12 calories at rest per hour. Fat burns 2-3 calories at rest per hour. More muscle = higher metabolic rate. It also means you need to eat to fuel those muscles.

*Who doesn't want to be strong? Muscle helps you to age better and prevent injury or recover better if you do get injured.

*If you lose 3-8% of your muscle mass per decade, you could be gaining 3-8% body fat during that time. Even if your weight stays the same, your body fat percentage increases by default.

But all is not lost! How do you prevent the muscle loss as you age? The same way as anyone does!

*fuel your exercise (aka eat enough)
*use resistance in the form of dumbbells and weights, resistance bands or good old fashioned body weight.
*choose activity and use the muscle (otherwise, you lose the muscle)
*get plenty of rest and care for your body
