I’m so excited about my exhibit! I was mentioned in a news article about America250!

A project several years in the making, the Onslow County Museum will open its America 250 exhibit on Saturday.

So excited about my exhibit on Saturday! I have been a part of the NC America250 committee for my county and my exhibit opens on Saturday 2/28 from 10-4pm. If you’re in the area, stop by, see the wonderful work the guest curators have put into it and talk to us and ask questions!

Fragments of the 1890 census exist! Check and see if your ancestors were from these states:
Alabama
District of Columbia
Georgia
Illinois
Minnesota
New Jersey
New York
North Carolina
Ohio
South Dakota
Texas

It does not include the entire state because only 1% of these records
exists but you never know…you could get lucky 🍀

Happy Black History Month! Today’s presentation was great! Thank you to Onslow County library for hosting my workshop today. Of course I went overtime but the participants learned a lot today. My next big event is presenting Francis Jack in my first museum exhibit titled “Black Patriots of Onslow County” at the Onslow County Museum - North Carolina on Feb. 28th for the county kickoff of the America250 celebration!

Happy Black History Month! It’s our 100th anniversary!

Those that know me know I’m a professional genealogist and that I love love love Finding Your Roots (don’t bother me on Tuesdays at 8pm bcuz my cousin Natasha Mason-Walker and I are texting about each guest and the info they’re finding out). I love Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and the work he does in our community and I am a HUGE fan. This article is a great read (and long so be prepared) to fully understand the work he and his show does. Let me know what you think.

Good morning My People! How did the formerly enslaved choose their last names? Well, there’s no easy way to answer. It might have been their enslavers surnames, it could have been their occupation or maybe it was something they heard or something to express their new status. Whatever the reason, choose every possibility to find them
