This got me deep in the bones of my knowing today. How many of us think that to be strong means to downplay our hardship? What message does that send the younger version of ourselves who had to survive it?

Does this seem like the opposite of a therapeutic message?

*It's not. Our depression, anxiety, and limbic brain thrive on the idea that we are an exception to the rule. It becomes a story we tell ourselves, and believe fiercely.

"This treatment might work for someone else, but not for me. No one understands how bad I have it. They deserve to get better, I don't."

Sound familiar? That is your brain in a disconnected state of fight or flight. Those thoughts seek to keep you in fight or flight by making you feel hopeless, frustrated, lost, and different.

Next time you notice thoughts like these, try to gently stop them as soon as you catch them. Place one hand over your heart. Give yourself a little hug if you feel up for it. Let yourself know, lovingly, that you are not a special case. The rules that apply to everyone else apply to you too.

Here are some tips for addressing your mental health holistically!

Psychotherapy has historically been the practice of a client (or couple or family) meeting with a therapist to talk through life's struggles, mental health symptoms, the past, the self, relationships, and much more. It often begins with an assessment of sorts, leading to a diagnosis and treatment pl...

This might seem counter-intuitive for some, but we don't actually have to give ourselves a hard time to stay on track with our goals. We can be neutral and objective about our progress, realign with our values and goals from a place of self- compassion, then take the first smallest step in that direction. In fact, judging and criticizing ourselves is detrimental to our progress since it activates the parts of the brain responsible for feeling punished, which causes most people to shut down.

Last night I was honored to join a group of moms who came together to support one another in the shared chaos of parenthood. Thanks to Telly and Mian for starting their amazing group, , and for allowing me to help facilitate it (although these ladies really supported each other beautifully without me doing much at all).

If you find yourself struggling in your new role as mom or mom-to-be, help is available. Motherhood can feel isolating, especially if you haven't found your "village." Having a baby brings so many unexpected changes and challenges. You are not failing if you are having a hard time: you are in the majority.

At HWC we specialize in PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders). Please reach out if you'd like to schedule an appointment!

*I will never post food pictures with messages of judgment because food and eating are not moral issues. I will not tell anyone how to eat. I will try to offer suggestions for optimizing your health, which you're welcome to take or leave.

In my own quest to make sure I was adequately nourishing my body, I learned the shortcut to "eat the rainbow." This is a helpful tool that allows me to eyeball my plate and see what colors are missing from any meal.

A variety of colors in your diet from fruits and veggies provide a number of health benefits to both mind and body.

This simple sheet pan is both versatile and tasty! Toss your favorite veggies and meat with olive oil and some seasoning, and bake for 20 mins at 400 degrees. Top with hot sauce, avocado, etc.
