Were you ever taught normal, healthy, optimal bladder habits? So many people get into sub-optimal habits without even knowing it and then think they have a weak pelvic floor, a small bladder… or they think that peeing and leaking all the time is just normal after having kids! (Nope— pelvic PT can help!)

A healthy bladder should be able to:
💦 Go 3-4 hours between voiding (aka peeing)
💦When needed, comfortably be able to delay 20 minutes after the first feeling of “hmm I think I need to pee”
💦Not leak or rush on the way to the bathroom
💦Urinate a minimum of 3/4 of cup every time we use the bathroom

The first step to habit change is noticing! Spend some time thinking about and/or journaling about your habits and symptoms.

We saw a post recently (from a well-known and widely-followed account) advocating for ways to “protect” your pelvic floor while pregnant: blanket recommendations to eliminate specific movements in each trimester. 😑

Our patients know because we say it all the time: there is no way to guarantee any outcome in pregnancy but there are many ways to stack the deck in your favor. There are also many ways to decondition yourself—such as scaling and modifying unnecessarily.

Every person’s pregnancy is different with symptoms, their comfort level, pain, fitness level, goals—— so we help each mama adjust and modify based on her own symptoms.
