A sweet young adult called our office because he had heard we were very LGBTQ+ friendly and he wondered if we knew any adult doctors. His last two experiences have been awful! I don’t really know any adult doctors but I was hoping someone might so I could call him back with some suggestions. Thanks! -Alex

What’s checkup season? Many children are due for their annual checkups or need physicals for school or sports, which makes May through August a pediatrician’s busiest time of year! Please reach out to us as soon as possible if you need any appointments before the new school year. We are already booking up for checkups, med checks, and other non-sick appointments!

As we come up to the anniversary of Acorn opening, I (Scott) wanted to take a minute to highlight the one person that makes it all possible. Alex majored in political and ethical philosophy at Brown (not pre-med) but still got into and graduated from the same medical school as me and was actively recruited by an internal medicine residency program, but instead became a freelance writer. Now that GIANT brain and even bigger heart is what makes Acorn Pediatrics function. She handles 99% of the business part of work, is my main sounding board for medical decisions and carries the mental load for our family. She has high expectations for me but even higher expectations for herself. Alex makes things work for patients even when it means less down time for her. She is the only reason we were one of the first offices to have covid vaccines and why our vaccine clinics went so smoothly. She stays up late reading medical journals to make sure that we are giving the most up to date advice and following the latest protocol. I get all of the pats on the back, but Alex is the engine that drives and steers Acorn as well as making sure there is gas in the tank. So as we mark 1 year of the doors being open at Acorn Pediatrics, I want to thank her for everything she does for staff, patients and our family - she really is the best and she makes such a difference in small and large ways, often without it even being noticed.

We would like to take another moment to express our gratitude for our wonderful new nurse practitioner, Jackie. Jackie is thorough and thoughtful with patients and caring and collaborative with co-workers. She and Scott work closely together to take care of our families, and like Scott, she is always looking for opportunities to learn and grow as a provider. She’s currently working on her lactation certification, which will be a terrific addition to Acorn Pediatrics! She is also a wonderful co-worker who never hesitates to answer the phones when Sarah is talking with other patients or help us with the less glamorous parts of running a pediatric practice like vaccine inventories and insurance paperwork. We are so grateful to have such a smart, conscientious provider join our team. If you haven’t met Jackie yet, you can for any upcoming appointment!

We would like to take a moment to express our gratitude for our fantastic front office coordinator, Sarah. If you have ever called or walked into our office, you’ve met Sarah. She probably knows you’re calling before you even say hello and listens like you’re the only patient on the phone even when she’s five calls deep. When you walk through our doors, Sarah greets every family with a smile and lets every child know they are welcomed and important. She also handles referrals, and if you’ve ever had to see a sub-specialist, it’s often overwhelming. Sarah keeps you in the loop about what to expect and will call 15 different places to get you in as soon as possible. Her empathy and kindness towards our patients and co-workers shines through every day, and we’re so grateful to have had her on the team since January!

Halloween got a little lost with organizing the COVID vaccine clinics, but we love Halloween too much to let it go especially when one of our patients dressed up as a squirrel with an acorn and a tree! I think we’ve got a new Acorn Pediatrics mascot!

130 kids vaccinated in 2 days including this silly kid in the red shirt!
Huge shout out to our Nurse Practitioner, Jackie (who didn’t want a pic) and our Front Desk Coordinator, Sarah (who snuck out before I took one).
It was such a group effort from our big kids babysitting their brother to our friends shuttling our kids back and forth. From a friend volunteering to take patients back and clean rooms to patients’ parents bringing coffee and donuts! But the biggest thanks goes to those 130 kids who got vaccinated even though shots are scary. Please share any pics you took, too! We love seeing them!

We have opened our waitlist for the COVID vaccine for ages 5-11!

You can access it through the patient portal:

1) Log into the patient portal: acorn.pcc.com/portal
2) Click on "Messages"
3) On the next screen, under “Patient” chose your child’s name & under “Subject” choose "COVID Vaccine Waitlist"
4) Fill out the form & you're on the list!

At this time, the patient portal is the only way to join the waitlist. If you can’t get into your patient portal, please email help@acornpeds.com with your child’s name, DOB, and the best email address for you.

Please note: FDA approval will only be the first step. We are not allowed to give the vaccine until the CDC guidelines are released. The vaccine also has to be shipped to us because they are different vials than the 12+ ones. Our shipment should coincide with CDC guidelines, but we are not in control of any of these steps!

Look who came home tonight! The vet called unexpectedly and we got to bring our swollen neck, drooling, lovable pups home. Even the cats gave them kisses! Thank you for your paws-itive thoughts and kind words!

Update: Thank you for your kind words and understanding! The dogs have to stay overnight at the emergency vet. Our black lab had multiple bites to the face protecting our mini-beagle (and probably us since it was in our backyard) from the copperhead. His face is very swollen, but the anti-venom seems to be keeping his airway open. He’s not eating or drinking but able to sleep with pain medicine. Our mini-beagle is eating and drinking, but his paw continues to swell. If it gets much bigger, he’ll get anti-venom, too. The vet is optimistic so we are (trying to be) too!

Hi all. It’s only us (Drs Scott and Alex) in clinic today (8/25), and this morning, our dogs were bitten by a copperhead — one in the paw and one in the face. We’re taking turns at the emergency vet’s office so you might get our voicemail more than once. We’re calling back all urgent calls first and will get to everyone else’s message as soon as we can! -Alex & Scott Iwashyna

My first patient was so excited to get her second shot because it means she will get to be way less stressed at whatever version of Senior Prom they are able to do this year! It encompasses everything Alex and I want to at Acorn. We never want or need to be a BIG practice - we just want to make a BIG difference in a little part of people’s lives. We are so lucky to be allowed to be a part of our patients’ care. (P.S. we still have some spots open on Friday April 23 for anyone you know who wants to be vaccinated with Pfizer)

I was super nervous this morning (to the point that I wrote out the directions on a white board). But our first round of administering COVID Vaccine went great! Thank you Virginia Department of Health for letting us be a part of vaccine administration. Once I stopped being terrified I would do something wrong, we were very happy to help!
